2017 Expedition XLT. 38000 miles.
Started hearing a wining noise at start up
Sounds like it goes away in 30 seconds to a minute is that normal,
Also noticed steam and water coming from exhaust today at start up
I started a Chevy next to it and it had no steam coming from exhaust?
Temp was 70 degrees but very humid rainy drizzle.

The Ecoboost engines produce that steam at start up. I believe its condensation that collects in the cats, although this is the only engine I've ever had that does it. Being an old schooler, the first time I saw it on a hot day I freaked, thinking it was a head gasket. But, it isn't. Its odd, but normal.

Can't help you with the whining sound.

I get the steam and lots of it in the fall and winter. Noise could just be a wet belt?

My 2003XLT 5.4 has done the steam out the pooper thing before but not all the time. It seems more likely in winter. One time after a month long trip (in a different vehicle) a ton of water poured out. That was scary. Someone said condensation forms if big temperature swings over 24 hours day after day. I'm more careful now to drive it regularly (weekly) to fully heated up state. Basically I have no idea whats going on and this is no help probably.

I also have a 2017 XLT with about 34000 on it. I do get the steam for sure with just about every startup regardless of weather.

I did experience the whining sound a couple of times. Sounded like the turbo spooling up maybe. Definitely made a high pitch fan sound. Again only happened a few times and one of those I was running a bunch of errands that day so driving a bit aggressive and lots of stop, jump out, get right back in and take off again. Figured I was being a little tough on her that day. I remember back to driving turbo cars and recalled letting them warm up and cool down a minute when starting/shutting down was recommended. Not like you need to when warming up a turbo diesel truck but still something I thought about. Anyway, I started either using the remote start or just sitting in the Expy for a minute or two before taking off and it hasn’t happened since.

This may not be helpful but that was one experience. I’ll keep watching this thread. Interested in hearing if anyone else has heard the noise at startup.
