So, I had a bit of a mishap that ended with severe damage to the 7-way cable on my travel trailer. I installed a new one only to find that while I have running lights and trailer brakes, neither left nor right turn signals/brake lights are working. Checking the voltage at the factory connector on the truck, I am finding 12v at the running lights (which I expected) and 5-ish volts at the trailer brakes with the gain set low (does this sound right?). Both L and R turn signals are registering .8-1.2v, with the brakes applied. These findings pretty much mirror the results I am seeing at the junction box on the trailer with the new cable installed.

I haven't had a chance to dig into the fuses/relays, but I assume that since I'm getting some voltage at the turn signals that I will find the fuses to be good. Would fried relays cause these symptoms? If so, can I pull another known working relay and swap it out to test - if so, which one(s) would be compatible? Also, if the relays are shot, do I need to buy specific ones (Turn signal) to replace, or are they multi-purpose? If the relays prove to be functional, where should I be looking next?

I apologize for the dumb questions, but electrical troubleshooting and components are parts of a skill-set which has always eluded me. I very much appreciate any insight.

Obviously not much interest, but I figure I'll update. It was the #45 fuse - which makes perfect sense considering the damage to the wiring harness.

What doesn't make sense (to me anyway) is why I was seeing any voltage at all with the bad fuse in place.

Glad you found it!! I just saw your post wondering where all the tail light experts were. I’m like you, if a fuse is blown how in the world do you get a voltage reading with the fuse blown......this is a different world that I grew up in so go figure.....

By putting the meter in the circuit you have added a parallel branch circuit. The meter reads how much voltage is in the new branch when the brakes are applied.

I just had electrical issues with my trailer, I voltage tested the same way and when I got a tiny bit of power I also assumed the fuse was good. It certainly was not!
