Hi all,

I need a crank to drop the spare tire.

I had the brilliant idea (I joke) to make my own out of a socket extension. I was having a few beers and had an extension for some reason on my desk. Eureka! So I ground down opposite the spring loaded ball on purpose but I guess it really wasn't necessary. Dumb dumb here should have done it on a 12" extension if that's what I'm going to use - this is too short. It turns the bugger in the small 'well' to drop the spare OK. It'll take forever tho.

So the question: does anyone have a spare I can buy or a link on where to get one? Can't find one and I'm certain that salvage yard expys would have had these nicked (taken) a long time ago.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: if someone has a picture of one I guess I can make one... I'd like to make a longer one with the crank similar to that of a hand wood drill.

Yours should be under the front hood. Mine is. I would imagine Ford still has them available, if you can handle dealer price. Sometimes they'll surprise you on price.

Hi-

Thanks. On my '01 it was tucked under the hood and was looong. Right above the radiator. I believe this one tho is much shorter and tucks into the spare tire kit area. I could be wrong.

I might just buy a 3 foot 1/4" or 5/8" round bar and bend one to shape. I'll hammer the crap out of the end to accommodate a socket. Lol, no oxy/acetylene torch to help. Mild steel is pretty workable when that thick (or thin lol).

I must be missing something here?

My 2003 has it in the rear above the spare. You already made the rectangular end that fits in the well, its just too short? Jam another extension and breaker bar on that and good to go. Ratchet would probably work too.

What am I missing here ?

I love New Yorkers - so direct! Thanks for not cursing me out. My mom was from Long Island.

I'm OCD and just asking. Really tho a ratchet will take way longer than a New York minute and would like to consider an option that will assist to drop quicker. As you know this shit happens at the worst time and like to get off the highway as quickly as possible. I did a spare change ('01 truck) in 9 minutes to get to work on time lol, 5 minutes early. Sweatn' bullets but Ok.

It will take 60 seconds max and that's only if your mother with aurthuritis does it. You wouldn't have enough torque with a hand drill thingamajobber. It a 2003 and its rusted. If you want to go at NASCAR speeds use a 40v driver. I'm not from NYC that's 7 hours away. Just answering. I'm FYI

Might be able to make a rig out if an old coffee grinder

The factory thingamajobber was manual crank too. Yes 40V might work tho. I have a 20V kit that will not break them - I tried.

Thanks again...

I just did my 03 tire recently. It was more like a breaker bar than a thingamajobber hand drill jerryrigged contraption

I had to soak it up good with PBlaster first for a day

Just a quick and short update. This 'kit' works great for dropping the spare tire. The only adder is the adapter from impact to 1/2" drive. It's an impact and it's stored under the second row seat. I have a tire iron for lug removal. I also have an inverter for battery charge if necessary tucked into the jack kit well in the back.
