A 3/4" breaker bar of at least 18", but 24" is best and a MAP gas torch.

Check-I have all that and actually have an oxy/acetylene torch too. I have 1/2” breaker bars (and a long pipe that fits nicely) and also a 3/4” one that I think is 2’.

I’m having a f**k of a time getting to this valve cover. I have all but 1 of the bolts out. I’ve looked at the instructions for the 32 valve on my cd. I’ve removed everything the instructions said but I’m stuck at the upper intake. I got the balance tube (I think that’s what it was called) off and 3 bolts off of the upper intake (front 2 and one in the back). I can see the other one in the back I need to remove (drivers side), but I just can’t get a wrench on it. I can’t even see the bolts on the back of it on the passenger side. There’s also supposed to be a third bolt in the front that I haven’t yet located. I think this needs to come off so I can get to the other end of that big EGR tube to get it out of the way (it sits right on top of the rear of the valve cover). Right now I can’t even see where the other end of the EGR tube goes. The tube is also making it impossible to get to the last bolt in the valve cover.

How in the heck do you guys even get your big man hands in these impossible spots that need unbolting?!! I figure if I’m having trouble, it must be much more difficult with big hands!![emoji16].

So any suggestions? I’m hoping things cooperate a little better tomorrow-I have to quit for today.

Now you understand the male auto shopping routine...
We check the lines of the body,
We check how cool the wheel tire assembly looks,
We check the coolness of the paint,
We then fire up the engine and rev it a few times to listen to the exhaust tone
Then we open the hood to check out the engine and engine bay. For the Navi's once we see it is a bear to work on - its "oh hell no!"

Haven't seen a navi so I can't compare to my 07 expy. The egr tube would probably go down to the exhaust manifold on that side. Might be easier to go in through the fender. You might be able to see the other valve cover bolts as well through there. I know in the old days at the dealership,it was actually easier to pull the body off to get at the heads on certain vehicles. Good luck girl. You'll get it. Patience is definitely key.

I’ve already gotten the EGR tube off of the exhaust manifold (through the tire well). I got one more bolt off of the intake and loosened another one. I then dropped the only wrench I was having any luck with (a little 10mm gear wrench-my only one of course) and it’s sitting somewhere I can’t see. Then my light died so I quit for the day! I’ll get the SOB it it takes me all year. I’m now on the internet wrench shopping!! Gear wrenches are one of the best inventions. I’m thinking an xl 10mm with an end that you can angle might do the trick.

Excellent video-thank you. I was hoping he showed how he got those stubborn hard to reach bolts out. I’ve taken just about everything apart he showed plus done other things that looked like they’d be in the way. I did finally spot that 3rd bolt in the middle towards the front of the intake. That was a sneaky one-hard to find but pretty easy to get out. Thanks again. I looked for videos the other day but didn’t find one as good as this one.

A telescoping magnet is your best friend for dropped wrenches or bolts/nuts. I've got 3 of them, in different sized magnets. Life savers. Just think how easy other cars will be to work on, after this job.

I have a telescoping magnet and have used it a lot on this project. However, I couldn’t find the little gear wrench with it. Maybe I’ll have better luck tomorrow! I was thinking the same-every other job will seem like a breeze after this!

This will give me more confidence to tear into my old Powerstroke. It needs a few things done (nothing major I hope) and I’ve been putting it off.
