Officially picked up our Expedition last night. We had it checked over by our mechanic and no problems were detected, had regular maintenance, seemed like a good vehicle.

This morning my wife left for Kansas City with her mother, sister and daughters to go see Carrie Underwood in concert tonight. Along the way the Expy would sputter some when she tried to pass a couple of times, and a check engine light came on for a minute or so as they got into KC (about a two hour trip). She was a little worked up when she called. She flipped through the gauges nothing abnormal, the transmission oil temp was at 194.

Anybody got any advice before she hits the road for the trip back tomorrow?

Thanks,
Josh

Sounds like a misfire. Could be a bad COP. What you've described doesn't sound serious, just irritating.

Go to Amazon or Ebay, search for "Panlong OBD2", and buy one per vehicle you own.

Leave them plugged in and download the app "Torque Lite" (free) on Android phones or tablets or headunits.

No more guessing what the heck is wrong if a CEL flashes at you. Whip out phone and check.

$11 for peace of mind

PS if iPhone/iPad, ask someone else what you need

I carpool with a guy to work who has a '14 F150 with the 3.5 eco, his truck did the same thing to us and I witnessed it first hand. Code was cylinder #5 misfire. Brought it to the dealer and they changed all the plugs, that one coil pack, and both his O2 sensors. Truck runs smooth now and he got a couple of MPG's back.

New spark plugs 20k miles ago. Nothing weird showing up on Carfax.

In light of the new-ish plugs, scan for codes, locate which cylinder, see if the plug is loose first then remove and inspect it for damage or gap issues anyway.

Torque down correctly, clear codes, drive around see if it comes back.

If it does, swap coils with the next cylinder, clear codes, see if it moves or stays (misfire codes end in the cylinder number the problem is on)

If it moves: change that coil.

If it stays: swap injectors with the next cylinder over, clear codes, see if moves cylinders or stays

Injector-moves: change that injector

Stays: ....well, ****. Time for new advice or maybe a professional opinion on the matter.

PS if you see coolant in the plug well, change that plug & coil, and find and change the leaky hose that caused the issue

Have the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes. Everything else is just guessing.
