I have an 2004 Expy 5.4 4WD. I had an injector plug crack, unfortunately the truck was running when I found it. The hot wire hit the fuel rail and the truck shut off. I replaced the plug. When I started it I had to turn the key twice. First turn it would turn over a few times and stop. The second time it would start fine but, shifted hard. I unhooked the negative all night. Now it won't start at all. Turn it over and it acts like you turned it off every time. I'm at a loss.

Can we get a little more detail? The symptoms are a bit unclear.

So the engine turns over, but won’t fire? Or does it fire and then abruptly “turn off”?

It will turn over fires once and then stops. I got it to start once after trying several times. It's getting fuel and spark. I'm not sure what it could have shorted out. My scanner is not showing any stores codes.

Looking at the wire diagram, it looks like the injectors are switched directly from the PCM. There’s no fuse in line, so my best guess is you fried the injector drivers in your PCM.

I would try swapping your PCM with one from a junkyard.A7FA294B-8705-4F64-8971-B47DF8E288A8.gif

Thanks Tom. I was slowly getting to that. If I find one at a junk yard do I need the matching keys?

Nope, the keys are programmed to your instrument cluster module which would not be affected.

Here's the easiest way to find one: www.car–part.com

It lets you search by year, model, and PCM code. These trucks are common enough that you shouldn't have a hard time finding one.

Just my opinion, sorry if anybody doesn't like it. Blind parts swapping can cause NEW problems but does occasionally fix something. You need some evidence of whats wrong and proceed to diagnosing the problem, not just start swapping in modules.

Also your descriptions are quite vague (to me anyway). "It will turn over fires once and then stops" What stops? Does it start the engine and run for <tbd> seconds and then stops running or does it stop turning over?

Not being critical just saying how it reads ….

Stops turning over. Like you turned off the key but the dash lights all stay on. It never fully starts except the one time. Like you accidentally turned the key back too far. It's hard to explain. I've never had one do this.

But what caused the problem to start?

The OP mentioned that the problem started when a wire shorted to ground. The wire was injector power wire, which connects directly to the PCM without a fuse inline. This isn’t random part swapping, but the logical failure given where is shorted.
