Hello all, new here.
Just got us a 17 last month with 35k miles. Both wife and I are enjoying that 3.5 tt. My concern is that air dam under the front bumper. Living in Alaska, rural, it’s not a matter of if we have an icy berm pushed in front of our drive, but when. This air dam is bound to get destroyed, just like all the rigs before.
My question is, is it worth keeping around and reinstalling it come spring, or just pitch it.
Thanks

I reccomend keep and reinstall. In the cold weather, winter, removal is probably ok. These engines run hot, air dams are not there for looks, they push air up from the bottom of the vehicle, to cool the engine, and keep air from going where it shouldn't. The one on the Expedition also helps move air through the radiator, transmission oil cooler, etc. I get where you are coming from, I live in Wisconsin, sometimes the only way to get out of the driveway is in the Expedition. Keep a close eye on engine and transmission temperatures after removing it. If nothing changes leave it off on into summer see what happens. Based on that you can make the decision to keep or toss next fall.

Oh, since you are a new owner, welcome to the family! Prepare yourself, normal engine temperature is 195+, generally 200 - 205 F. Same holds true for transmission temperatures. Above 225 - 230 F something is wrong. Running 90 mph with cruise set to hold that speed, on the freeway for long distance, the transmission temperature hovers in the 201 - 206 F range with engine temperature around 196 - 200 F. I have been told, hope I never see it, transmission temperature when it's working hard, like when towing heavy loads, can push 300 F.

Yes, I noticed that high transmission temp the other day. Way higher than what I’m used to seeing on my truck.
Thanks for mentioning that.

Just cut off the bottom half, Thts what I did on my 16 EL platinum. And while some ppl will think your engine temps will rise, they will not. There is plenty of air being forced through the front bumper cut outs to keep everything cool. I’ve had mine off for 2 years and saw zero side effects.

I unbolted mine a month after I bought my truck is been hanging in my garage for 2 years. No fuss and no danger of it be damaged in deep snow.

It has ZERO affect on the cooling in the Expy. It is merely an MPG thing on the 15-17’s.
