Does anyone know what model year the spark plug issue was fixed

IIRC, it was mid-year on the 2008 models.

Then you have the old 2-piece design. The change was implemented mid way through 2008. Some 2008 have the new (revised) design, others don't. The coil boot color is how you can tell (black = old, brown = new). All 2007's should be of the old design, however.
Go watch YouTube videos by Ford Tech Makuloco on how to remove the old design ones with less chances of them breaking on you. There's a specific procedure to follow.

My 2008 built Oct 2007 has the brown coil boots and the two piece design plugs so it's not a steadfast rule.
I was able to remove six plugs using Ford Tech Makuloco videos. Has the Expy towed to the dealer to remove the other two. Only cost me $50 per plug (I have them my parts) and they reset the computer also.
