Curious to all those who do their own oil changes.....how much oil do you get out of the truck and how long (time and mileage) is your oil change interval?

I don't measure/check the old oil volume. I did in the days when I had leaking/smoking vehicles. The newer ones don't leak oil (never any on the garage floor or in the carport) and I don't see smoke on start up.

As to oil change interval. I use Mobil 1 and change the oil/filter every 6,000 miles. Whether it's 6,000 miles in 10 months or 6,000 miles in 18 or 20 months.

Full synthetic 5000 miles since day one. No need to measure amount you get back unless you’re leaking somewhere

Oil will evaporate as it heats up, so the volume you pull out will always be less than what you put in the crankcase 5000 miles ago (which is the recommended interval for the F150/Expedition).

The more volume of oil required, the more you will lose. So, since the V8 Expedition requires 7 qts, the loss will be greater than a vehicle with 4 or 5 qts in the crankcase.

I guess not many people bother even checking!

I dont go out of my way to measure, but its easy enough to figure out when I pour the old oil into empty bottles. I have no leaks and see no smoke, but only got about 6 out out when doing my last oil change this weekend.

1/2 qt sitting through out engine and an other 1/2 in the filter. Just Drain and re-fill it. It is not an exact science. A little over won't hurt anything. The manual says 'between the hash marks on the dip stick'. "the level is OK". The new vehicles, dash info center also checks the oil level.

No idea what comes out of any of my vehicles...who cares. Make sure you check the dipstick in between changes and keep in the proper range. 3,000 mile oil changes on all especially the Ecoboost with turbos. Turbos want clean oil for longevity.

I'm not worried about over or under filling. I'm worried about whether or not my engine is consuming more oil than whats considered normal.

The dealer performs a oil consumption test. The vehicle is topped off and driven for 1000mi. It is then re-checked. One Quart or more, they warranty the engine. Anything less is considered normal. You are supposed to check oil on a regular basis, not at oil changes.
