It's also an access panel for wiring and piece/parts. It will pop off if you pry it out but it requires enough force that it feels like it's going to break. If you do pop it out file the catch points down a little to make it easier to pop in and out.

That is interesting. When I had my 2009 XLT I thought this tray was molded into the dash (i.e. all one piece). I couldn't find a reference to a separate part for the tray in Ford's diagrams. For the 2015-17 the center tray was redesigned to include a center channel speaker on models equipped with the Sony sound system, so it for sure has to be a separate piece in those years. They also changed the texture of the dash panel top surface and re-tooled the center area below the HVAC vents.

Yes, the pre-2015 3d Gen tray is part of the dash cover.

Reviving this thread. To clarify, 2009-2014 3rd gen dash tray are 1 piece with the entire dash? 2015+ 3rd gen the dash tray is a separate piece?

Trying to find a good use for the damned tray.

I like that a lot, looks great! Sadly only uses the center partition but better than nothing! I notice you have a speaker, are you able to remove your tray?

Mine does not have a speaker and I'm not sure I can even remove the tray. I will look into this one further!

Never tried removing the tray or speaker. I just screwed it into the plastic and double-sided taped it. Been working great for over a year now.
