Windshield leak

Where's the GEM module located exactly? I had my window sealed shortly after I bought my 2000 EB due to crazy electronic issues but my rear wiper works when it wants and when I adjust my passenger side mirror the radio stops while pressing the mirror adjust knob. Maybe there's some water in my module (????)

You talk about Chevrolet being a lemon, ha,ha, you better look again through out this forum and see just how many things can be affected by this little windshield leak, I wouldn't' be surprised if someone says that their gem has caused their right rear tire to go flat.Ha,Ha.

Mine was the right rear, but since I rotated it's the r/f. When I bought my 2000 2 years ago I thought it was haunted. But after sealing window all is pretty good. Somebody should make some sort of splash shield to go over gem, just in case moisture still gets in.

Quite sure GM has their own problems.

Anything inside the fuse panel can be effected, including the starter relay. Mine's not cranking again and just recently had it repaired. But the shop did mention this and just have to reseal the windshield.

So when this happens and you need to replace the module on a 97 can you just pick up a used module or does it need to be reprogrammed for your specific vehicle?

I had the same issue. Call a local auto glass shop to have your windshield removed. Have him remove all the urethane on your truck. The metal under the urethane along the top of the windshield is probably rusty so take a wire wheel brush and clean the rust up and have the auto glass tech apply primer to any bare metal. This should take care of your leak issue.

Bamfster, the fix for the leaky windshield is really a function of how long you let it go before you enacted the fix. At a minimum, you need to have a new seal put on the windshield. This will prevent the water from intruding back into the truck.

As for other things, some members have been fortunate to simply pull the GEM module out, dump the water out of the module and all be good (yes, water came out of the module). Others have not been so fortunate and they had to replace their GEM modules. The GEM module pretty much controls everything electric inside the cab of the truck. So, when it starts going bonkers, you get lots of interesting things to happen.
is the electronic locks doing a chatter (lock/unlock rapidly) when the interior buttons are pressed a symptom?

I had the same thing here, The 4x4 would go on and of, the windows would notwork correct, and it tried to start by it's self.as well as the radio playing at night. Iput a bypass on it till I figured it out.

Your problem is water making it's way into the GEM module under drivers side foot area. I fought mine for years, and finally after sealing every inch all the way past mid way on windshield. What finally worked is a good squirt of dielectric grease on the plugs going to fuse box inside. That and I wrapped a fairly large plastic bag over box, and GEM. I can now go through even the worst storm with 0 Gremlins! Pulling your 20 year old windshield and resealing is a gamble. If you go the shop route, buy a new windshield, but still seal those inside electrical plugs.

Moose - any pics? I am having the same issue. No leaks for 19 years - windshield finally had a chip that could not be fixed and the windshield was replaced. Now it leaks.
I have had Safelite pull it twice now, and i have bee there to see the GIANT bead of glue they used before pulling it and watched them do it again. Still leaking.
They have been great, but we are all perplexed on the water entry.
I don’t believe in coincidence, so i will keep asking them to work the problem - but any insight or other solution would be great.
The Expy has been amazing for 20 years and 210k miles - don’t want a simple water drip be what kills her.

Help.

The gem is super easy to replace and not too expensive, I believe I got mine for around $125. I’ve heard of someone wrapping the gem in plastic as it doesn’t get hot.
