I have seen a number of aftermarket steps that go in the receiver. Some claim to offer protection from rear and collision to the bumper so I have several questions.

Do they really offer any protection to the rear bumper?

Wouldn’t a collision at a certain speed end up damaging the receiver and frame?

At a high enough speed would the step worsen the safety protection built in to the bumper and crumple zone, or whatever they call it nowadays?

The step bumpers are just for parking lot taps, not for real collision damage.

I have a rear step installed 90% of the time and love it. I don't count on it for any meaningful impact protection. But it's great for getting into the cargo area.

I also have a Go Rhino rear step and it helps me get into the cargo box and offers some type of protection from impact. I got it really cheap on ebay.

Depends on your definition of protection. I was rear-ended 2 years ago in my 2000 Expy. Person hit me doing probably 45. Back end of the truck was saved. Tore the front end off her truck. Looked good until I had it looked at by the insurance adjuster. Bent the frame to the tune of $4500. Actually totaled my Expy. Damage was minor as far as I was concerned, and was on the backside of the rear end so didn't affect the driving/alignment. Bumper just set 1/2 inch low on one side. Bought it back for $380. Drove it for two more years. So yes, saved the bumper, bent the frame. Still leave my hitch in the receiver andwill probably get a step. Good for low impact bumps in the parking lot.
