I have recently got a 99 Ford expedition xlt 4.6 4x4 and I am looking for good but cost effective upgrades and I need help

I have a 1999/4.6 also, best mod I did was the "brown wire mod" switch to disable awd when not needed. look it up, cost $5.00 for switch and wire.

Just cut the wire. No real need for a switch. The 4hi/4lo switch still works like normal.

As far as the OP goes- depends on what you’re looking for. And what does “budget” mean. I’d first assess the current state of the truck.

Tom is correct, cutting the wire works however I, at times like the automatic function of the awd. I never feel right switching into 4x4 high with the vehicle moving. It is just me. Great forum, great people.
