Also, GM's displacement on demand is much improved over 10 years ago. It is like a default V8 that can switch to a V6, and now a V4. Ford's approach has been to use a default V6 and give it the power of a V8 when necessary.

GM’s Active Fuel Management (AFM) Cylinder Deactivation 100% sucks donkey balls. The system sucks and should not be on these vehicles. Leave it activated and you’ll be consuming oil In eventually and driving around town is atrocious. Not as noticeable on the Highway but still annoying.
We got my wife a Suburban and the AFM is so noticeable when in V4 mode and when it switches in and out. The rumble in V4 mode is so frustrating.
I got a Range Technologies AFM Disabler and the truck drives like an absolute dream no more V4 mode for us.

The extra inches in the Suburban over my EL are noticeable and very welcome if the two little guys are already in their car seats in the middle row it is easier for the oldest boy to still climb in front of them to get to the middle pass thru to the third row.

I love the looks of the 15-17s Expeditions, I can’t say the same for the 18+ nor can my wife which is why she chose the Suburban over an 18+ Expedition. She did not want a 15-17 Expedition because she did not want the same vehicle as me.

We are happy with both.

... Leave it activated and you’ll be consuming oil In eventually and driving around town is atrocious. ....

What I'm hearing is that the Active Fuel Management issues involving oil consumption are no longer an issue. I'm hearing that from owners as well. This was a huge issue in the earlier years of AFM.

Ecoboost was causing issues with intake valves, especially if you used cheap fuel and oil. The newer hybrid injector system may have solved that issue. If you do have a lifter issue, it's pretty quick to take the head off and replace the lifter. If you have to clean valves, the only recommended solution it to remove the heads to clean the valves. That's not a job I would ever want to do.

I believe that both engines have become much more reliable in the last few years.

Say what you want, but GM rules the SUV market, and deserves to. Top notch products IMO.
I’ve owned several Tahoe’s and Yukon Denali trucks.

Ford stood totally pat on the Expy for years until 2018. Talk about stale bread..
Not only has GM redesigned and updated regularly, but they have built a far superior SUV until now.
But, “now” may not last more that 2 years. The new Caddy is far and away more impressive than the Nav, and the new Denali will outsell the Expy plat easily.

I have never had GMs be built superior at all..and I'm a GM guy form a GM town!

GMs have more trans issues and failures, more electrical problems and throttle body tps issues, more blend door actuator and HVAC head unit problems, more cluster problems with stepper motors, and FAR MORE fuel sender and fuel pump problems.

Now this only applies up to about 2005 in many aspects.
ALSO only applies to people who keep them a long time or the owners who have them when they are 10-17 years old.
Almost all the trans last until 125+ or so and the fuel pumps last years too...BUT the poor person who has them when they have 150 on them will be replacing parts and rebuilding trans and dealing with issues on the GM when the ford will likely go to 225-245 with no issues.

NOW this also only really applies to GM 5.3 and newer and 99 and up in may trucks at least some of it.
The older with 5.7 and standard trans trucks like my old 93 Z71 are super dependable workhorses.
Far better in some ways than an F series with a 4.6 in it. I have 305K on mine.

Interesting viewpoints guys. I never really paid much attention to this segment before. A buddy years ago got his dads like 98 Tahoe out and we’d ride in it. Was basically just a gm truck with the suv body on it. Was my only experience with one until the test drive.

Why? The Suburban has been around since 1935 and is common in popular media. The FBI agents in action movies always have driven a Suburban since the 80’s. It’s America’s vehicle and a historic nameplate.

I disagree Ford let the Expedition go stale, that’s not true if you look at the facts. The 07-14 Expedition is arguably nicer than the 07-14 Tahoe with a more refined ride and extra gadgets like the heated/cooled seats, power fold 3rd row, auto dimming mirrors, etc. The GM’s didn’t get cooled seats until 2015.....Ford has had cooled seats and IRS in the Expedition since 2003. Ford really only got behind from 2015 onward when the new GM’s came out....the 07-14 Tahoe is very comparable to the 07-14 Expy as far as tech so that “stale” theory goes out the window since GM did zero updating in that time.

If you take a 2012 Expedition Limited and compare it to a 2012 Suburban LTZ the Expedition has several extra and more advanced features. GM in that era doesn’t have auto dimming exterior mirrors, speed sensitive volume, cooled seats, genuine wood accents etc, but the Ford does. It may have been the “value-leader” in price but the Expedition has always offered more content. The GM really has no significant advantages from an individual stand point and was shy 30 lb ft of torque to the Ford 5.4L V8 for towing....yet it still outsold the Expedition. It’s not always the best vehicle that sells the most.

Not bashing Chevy either, they are great trucks.

Youd be right j of we werent talkin about public perception. I like the third gen, moreso after owning my nav, which both my wife and i loved and miss dearly and think in a better looking pkg(which is subjective), it would have been better recieved. Like i noted, even after 2015, the ford units were still a better pkg than the gm units. However, gm did make mi or updates to their units over the crs of their lifecycles which ford didnt do, which kind of made them stale. Before the redo in 2015, i believe gm added led headlights, cooled front seats, blind spot monitoring, magnet ride shocks. Not only that, alot of vehicles recieved updates and in some cases even new units in that span of 07 - 14. So in public perception atleast, the ford units got stale-ish.
