I just bought a 2020 Aviator this year. It has the new 400HP 3.0 EB in it. I wonder where the water pump is on that thing? There is something to be said about bigger HP numbers in smaller cars like, “HELL YA”. But it appears to come at a price of serviceability. Funny thing about the Flex is it got pretty good reviews in 2011 for a Ford. We will soon be complaining about the battery life and motor failures in our new Expy’s and us old guys will be like “do you remember everyone crying about the cam phasers? We had no clue how good we had it”.

Do you drive a flex? The Expy has a 3.5l EcoBoost. Unless they have changed something it doesn’t look to bad.

The 5.0l is very similar to EB water pump. Maybe a 1 hour job.

Thank goodness we can change the water pump easily, and its not internal.

Yeah, I searched the water pump replacement before taking the decision to buy the Expy. Made sure it is external. Internal pumps have been proven catastrophic but they have been Used by other manufacturers in the past.

Regarding the cam phasers issue:

- I think you all need to address it If it happens. The loud rattle means metal parts are hitting each other - which is never good for an engine. This could produce shavings that lead to further damage. I am not an expert though!

- Ford most probably went with a plastic pin to reduce the wear on the Cam phaser gear due to the pin striking the phaser body when it locks. This wear causes very similar rattle on start up on Hondas and Toyotas — but at considerably high mileage.

- I like the expedition and the Ecoboost lineup. I support Ford for being forward thinking and on par with German manufacturers in terms of engine and transmission technology. I am just wondering how come that the phaser Pin failure didn’t show up during engine Development and testing ?!

Externally on the front as it is a longitudinal engine. I had a 2012 Explorer with the NA 3.5L. I had 160,000+ on it, not a single drop of coolant lost, but I was getting real nervous before I traded it for the Expedition.

I’m about as German as you can get but I won’t buy a German car lol....the Germans and Italians make some pretty bad cars these days. It seems after 5 years you can expect 30 trouble codes and 8 dash lights....the dealer says you can either spend $16,000 on maintenance or trade in. No thanks. I think Japanese cars would be my seconds choice if I didn’t buy American brands....they are pretty basic but I like their long term outlook and the way they perfect mechanical systems for their customers rather than focus on rushing new stuff to market. More evolution than revolution with them.

We had a 2010 Flex Ecoboost...one of the first ones in my city (if not the first) as we had to factory order. That thing at the time was literally a SHO wagon. No major issues and sold it 2 years later (dumb move lol) for an 2012 Infiniti QX56. Couldn't get rid of that fast enough (electrical issues galore) migrated back to Ford (Lincoln) with an MKT that my wife drives and now I have the Expy. I do put lots of mileage on my Expy as I just topped 100,000 kms in my 2018, but I do see a few more issues with this Ecoboost than my MKT EB which is up at 121,000 kms.
