I'm skeptical of claims of torque + horsepower gains on modern normally aspirated engines like the 5.4 V8 I have in my 2010 expedition.

Say i'm willing to spend up to 1k on parts and up to 10 hours labor (i'm doing it myself but I don't want to spend more than a weekend dealing w it). Everything on the table.. tune, pulleys, headers, intake... gotta run on 87 octane with no highway mpg reduction.

Can I get a legitimate HP+ torque increase, and are there any independent tests available?

You aren’t making any big power increases on 87 octane if you aren’t going to buy premium gas. Slight gains are seen with 91+ octane tunes @25 horsepower or so. I suppose you could gain some power with 87 but imo it isn’t worth the $$ and time you’ll sink in. The stock intake is about as good as it gets for torque. Headers and tune will be doing the most on that list.

Without a turbo or supercharger, it's not gonna give you any significant gains

It's already crazy fast for a six-and-a-half-foot tall brick. Plenty of power to merge, accelerate, switch lanes, pass, easily spins tires, etc.

If yours hesitates and doesnt accelerate, you need a tune up not a tune
