When I travel with my boat or SxS trailer I put these on the roof. A few extra tools and a guaranteed tire change. Funny thing is (Knock on a aluminum/ plastic hood) I use them more for other people on the road. One trip we ran into a group that where almost to the lake in the middle of nowhere. Big group in shorts and flip flops staring at the wheel. I told my wife I was going to stop and see if they where good. They couldn’t get the lugs off and had pulled the front tire on a rock to try and jack it up. I was in shorts and flip flops. Grabbed my coveralls, bottle jack and this beast and gave them a NASCAR style pit stop. It’s so much more fun when it’s not you.

Nice tool setup. I wanna our something similar together but space is key for me. The roof rack is the place for them seeing as how you won’t be getting into them often... hopefully!

you gotta link for those or where you bought them from? Also, what rack mounting hardware for them?

They are just Milwaukee Pack Outs with the Pack Out wall base. Totally not designed for this but it has worked so far. They just click in and I don’t have to strap them down. Home Depot sells them and all the tools. I used the RotoPax mounting kit to bolt them down. I did get longer bolts to make it easier to mount. Then I have the Rhino Rack cable lock to help with theft. Both use the small backing nut so they will work with the Yak. The inserts are just kiezen foam I have cut out. They squeak and make a little noise. A strap would probably help but I don’t want one. But I have made several “Kit’s”. And they also fit perfectly in one of my RV bins so I don’t have two of everything. When not in use I bought the Milwaukee roller base and through them on it in the garage. I have the step that goes in the door striker and use it and the top of the rear tire to get them up and down.

I bought this, but I would buy the backing nuts and bolts from your local rack place. They where a little short and you need to be able to lift the backing plate a little to get them to grab. I couldn’t do it with the wall plate in the way so just bought a little longer bolt. I just used two mounting locations in the center and it holds fine. The ones with the arrows by them.

Ordered. Thanks for the info, I remember reading some of your comments about these in the past but just this week the wife and I have been talking tool talk for our setup. Timing is everything, as they say... Thanks for helping me look extremely inventive and creative lol

Nice, I have been thinking of putting a fire extinguisher on my roof rack. Yes someone can steal it, but there’s a lot more expensive items on my roof.

Worst place for a fire extinguisher is outside, like locking a firearm in the trunk when you may need it. Best would be where a trapped driver could reach it. Our state police have a installed system in each vehicle where they just pull an over head chain for fire suppression in the event of a trapped trooper.

This is a fun thread. Thanks Fozzy.
Things I keep in the Expe... The Expe is not my main vehicle, so ironically enough I keep more in my Edge. The '17 edge has better storage options then the '16 Expedition

Basic tool kit
First-aid kit (including sanitary napkins for the ladies)
Random vehicle recovery kit which includes a strap with loop ends. 2 shackles and 2 trailer hitch pins.
Rope, a few kinds
NOCO Genius Boost (to jump start)
Jumper cables
If I'm in the vehicle I have a small bug out bag with my M&P Shield and ammo.

So funny story. We live in Utah. For vacation one year we took a trip to Oregon Coast. We started at the Redwoods and worked our way up. Instead of dragging the travel trailer that distance we decided to tent camp. Our 2nd to last day we were on our last ditch effort to finding a camping spot. It was the weekend so it wasn't going so well. We got flagged down because these 4 teenagers managed to get the Toyota Sienna minivan stuck so bad in the sand that you could not get under the front bumper. They had no way of getting out and no one was stopping. So we stopped. I had a tow strap, but it was buried in the compartment under all the gear. We have 4 kids so the Expedition was full... up to the roof and all of the back. So here I am, unloading all the gear on the rear to get to the bottom. I find my strap. I attempt to attach the strap to the Sienna. In Toyota's infinite wisdom the whole bottom of the stupid vehicle is a giant covering of some sort. The only thing I could get to is the lower a-frame on one of the wheels. But the only thing I could do with my strap is to loop it through the loop. I now have it attached, but no way of connecting it to the Expedition (I didn't have the shackles then). The only thing I had was the pin that my rear cargo container was using.... so I then unloaded that thing, pulled it off, then put the strap in the rear hitch.
I made sure that my right 2 tires were on the pavement, because the sand was very soft, put the expe in 4 low and slowly pulled the sienna out. It did it without any issues of course. I was able to pull the sienna to a point where it too had two wheels on the pavement. Then we loaded it back up.
We never did find a spot to camp but instead spent the night at a rest area... we found a motel for the next evening. It ended up being one of the funnest trips... But, moral of the story, put your first-aid kit and your recovery items at the TOP, NOT the bottom. :)
