Buying a used ford expedition and most do not have HD tow package can one be installed aftermarket?

My 2019 Navigator took 6 weeks on special order. Great way to get what you want. The price was less than stock units.

We ordered ours as well and it was worth the wait, I think we will do this again when we buy new.

Honest question...

If I really don’t care about 3.73s, or 2 speed transfer case, sure as shit don’t need the fancy back up knob

why not just add a brake controller and if needed the radiator? It’s like $400 in parts

You should care about the gears. A 3.31 is a pretty lazy gear for a big heavy vehicle.

Even in a 10sp? Seems like once it’s rolling it’s not a big deal and don’t you guys with 10speeds lock out a handful of gears anyway? Not to mention anyone bumping up in tire size is effectively knocking gearing down as well

I’m not disagreeing that the tow package isn’t ideal, just hard to come across for a decent price.

I just don’t see myself using 4x4 much or the 2 speed transfer case. My wife will our around in the car during the day, we’ll run 80 when we travel, and sometimes pull a Light travel trailer

The expy without 3.73s sucks. Drive one with and without back to back. It’s stark. Just not enough torque off idle to get rolling. You’ll wish you had the tow pack parts once you tow even a lawn mower trailer. You don’t need 4wd to appreciate the rest of tow package. Mine is 2wd.

As a data point: I do not have the tow package. I don’t find the gearing to be a problem with the ~5k trailer I tow, but have not towed extensively since getting the vehicle (still way better than the Previous model GM suburban with the 5.3).

The brake controller is trivial to add. A bigger radiator would be more difficult but a good addition. I cannot see adding gearing to be a reasonable option at all.

if you have doubts, hold out for a tow package. Better to have it and not need it, or not have to worry about it.

Drive a lazy non tow pack and a tow pack, you will notice how sluggish the non tow pack is immediately.

Even tho you have 10 gears to pick from, your overall ratio is still harder to push with a 3.31, so every gear will have less ability to move the vehicle. If you run all highway, the 3.31 is probably ok, but in town and backroads a 3.31 would be unhappy.

I have a 2017 with the 3.31. It's sluggish on 87. Fine on 93. No issues with it towing 7k.
