Occasionally while towing our airstream, I get a notification on the dash that the trailer has been disconnecting.

When I pull over to check, the umbilical cord is still in place and all the lights are working properly.

I pull out and re-insert the umbilical cord, and I'm usually good to go for the rest of the trip.

Does that error message signify any real loss of functionality, or can I just ignore it next time?

If the trailer really is disconnected, you can lose the trailer brakes and signals. Unfortunately it happened to me once when a family member didn't connect the trailer plug properly. I immediately noticed substantially increased brake effort. Now I verify everything when we hook up, since it's my responsibility as the driver.

That’s the thing, the brakes and lights still seem to work. But maybe it’s just a notice the cord is getting loose and could fall out.

I thought maybe the anti-sway mechanism would cease and that wouldn’t be immediately discernible.

My F150 does this and I think it’s the connector on the truck side. The tabs don’t make good contact with the trailer 7 pin harness, I plan on trying to get the connector warrantied soon.
