Hey Guys! I stumbled onto this forum while doing some research and I’m hoping someone can help. I’ve got a 2001 5.4 RWD expedition that my dad bought new. I’m trying to install a brake controller but can’t find the factory harness. I’ve looked all around where it’s supposed to be and can’t seem to locate it. There are fuses installed for the trailer brakes and the wiring running to the back of the vehicle looks like it’s wired for brakes. Does every expedition come with this wiring harness or only the ones with the tow package? Trying to decide if I just install it from scratch or keep looking. Thanks for the help!

Yes there should be a wiring harness under the dash drivers side. It could be tucked way up in there. best to take that bottom plastic piece off so you can see better.
If you still cant find it might be possible previous owner cut it and used for powering some other aftermarket device.

Thanks. I guess I’ll keep digging. The only things my dad did to it was have a hitch/4 flat plug installed and the ford factory cd changer in the center console. I’ve pulled a couple dash panels off but still no dice. It must be tucked way up there.

I had a 02 4.6 RWD XLT and it had no hitch ever and it had the harness. I put the hitch on and used the trailer brake harness with no problem.
here are pics of the harness hope this helpsView media item 7188View media item 7187

My 99 EB 4x4 has the factory towing package, but I could not find either end of the brake harness. I eventually gave up, and just wired it up myself. I asked the previous owners (who bought it new in 99, and I know them) about it, and they swore they never looked for it, or had anything hooked to it, despite having the tow package and pulling a pop up camper for many years. About 2 years later, I happened to find the factory under dash wiring tucked WAAAY down in the carpet under the dash, with the plug cut off. Well that got me curious, so I started unwrapping the harnesses under the rear end frame. I eventually found that end of the harness tucked up in another harness in front of the rear wheels (also with no plug). It looked like it was tucked there from the factory. I can't explain it, the PO can't explain it, the dealership couldn't explain it, although the VIN # claims it has the tow package. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I was running short on time and ended up just taking to a shop to get the brake controller wired up. They spent almost an hour looking for the plug and finally gave up and just hard wired it in. Interesting about it being under the carpet. That wouldn’t surprise me because the wiring is all there under the vehicle. Thanks again for your help!
