The roof paint on my dark blue XLT is toast. All these years in the TX sun has turned it to a flaking mess. Rattlecan paint would probably last about 6 mos even if I put in the proper amount of prep labor, professional paint job is not in the budget. Have any of you experimented with bedliner coatings on your roof?

I had the same problem with mine. I thought about doing the bed liner coating as well but didn't go through with it. I saved up for a few years and got the truck repainted. If you did coat the roof in bed liner I would try to find a clear color. I just dont think black would last very long in the heat.

Good point about the black & the TX heat. My pickup had a spray-on bedliner done when it was new(2000)which has held up well, but I do remember it was a urethane product. Pretty sure they sanded the bed before applying the urethane. Not sure what is available now.

How about that silver aluminum flake Karnak tar paint they put on flat roofs? It may melt a little and drip down the sides but heck, it's 20 years old now.

Okay, I did my research and pulled the trigger on my roof coating. I ordered a 2-part urethane product called Raptor.

As with any paint coating job the devil is in the prep work. I pulled the roof rack off first and started sanding. No way I was going to sand thru all that rust, so I got it fairly smooth, treated it with phosphoric, scrubbed with soda and water, dried it, then coated with rust stop metal primer.

I should mention here this will be a 2-stage process. I'm masking off the outside edge of the main water channels and applying the bedliner between and under the roof rack rails. I'll touch up the blue as needed outside the rails, plus deal with the hood separately.

The Raptor coating comes as a kit, spray or roller. I don't want to deal with spraying, and the roller kit is a little more than needed for the roof, (and half the price)so that was perfect. It comes with texture rollers, but I'm using smooth foam. It also comes with silica grip media to be mixed in before application which I am leaving out.

I'll post pics soon.

I'm not that familiar with anodizing, but the aluminum rack appeared to be coated with something like paint(peeling off in a few places), so a sanded it a bit, cleaned it, primed with rattle can etching primer, & then top-coated with flat black bumper & trim paint. We'll see how it holds up. Here's the rack & roof back together.....

Still work to do on the edges & hood when the color match paint arrives.
