As for the trade not sure what state you are in but where I am the trade in value takes the tax off of the vehicle purchase price you would owe. For instance if the new Vehicle is sale price is 60k and they give you 40k on a trade you only end up paying 20k in sales tax on the new vehicle regardless what you owe on the trade. In my state that 40k trade in with the tax savings is effectively getting 2.4k more for it at 6% sales tax so it would be equivalent to getting 42.4k if you sell it out right or to Carvana / Carmax ect.

Yes,

Dealers often adjust the value of your trade based on the tax savings amount. The know you lose that when sell privately.

I picked up my 2019 Platinum a little below invoice with 0% financing and Carvana gave me $2000 more for my trade.

Prior to using Carvana, the dealer kept telling me how much I was saving in taxes and deducting it from the NADA trade in value.

I said, "That's not how this is going to work," and took the trade off the table.

I still came out $500 ahead and the Carvana experience was painless. The entire transaction took 20 minutes.

Dealers lobbied for that tax break to entice new car buyers and when they use it against the customer by lowering the trade value it really rubs me the wrong way.

Locate the vehicle that you want and ask the dealer for a copy of the Smart Vincent Report for that specific vehicle. They may not want to give it to you but insist.

The Smart Vincent will give you the price of Ford's X Plan, Z, A, & D along with all of the rebates that you are eligible for.

They should at least match the lowest plan price. I was able to well below the lowest plan price last Sept for a 2019 model before the 2020 models came out.

We just negotiated to buy our Expedition. I was offered $3500 for my trade but decided to sell it privately. We ended up selling it (2009 Odyssey) for $7200 on craiglist within a couple days. Maybe we got lucky? But I knew I could easily beat the trade-in, carvana, etc offers because my vehicle was clean and well maintained.

As for negotiating, by being patient and realistic you should get a good deal. It's nice not to involve the trade and just look at raw numbers.

I have found that dealerships will all come down to a certain price, maybe 6 to 7% off MSRP right away. They will ignore you if you send a low-ball offer of around 15% off MSRP or more, meaning they will not go back and forth. So if MSRP is $74k and you say I'll give $62k, they will just say sorry best we can do is $69k, the price that most dealers will come to easily.

They are hesitant to go lower until they know you are very serious, as they do not want you playing their numbers off of other dealers. We worked with a local dealer 10 minutes away and told him we were ready to buy today if we could get to $xxk, which was 10% to 11% off MSRP. Initially they said no, but a few weeks later we called again and came up $500 saying we were still ready to buy and wanted to stay local. They came back and said sure, but we would have to come up $750. At that point we were at 10% off MSRP and we went in and signed everything.

We have had the same experience four times now selling vehicles privately; I'm shocked at how much more I can get for selling privately each time. Most recently, we sold our 2007 Tahoe with 28K miles privately after buying our Expedition. Ford offered us $19K to trade it in, and I sold it on Craigslist for $27K. It only took about two days to find a buyer. So yeah it takes a bit more work (I put about 8 hours into detailing the car, posting the listing, and closing the sale), but for 42% more in this case it was worth it! I think in this particular case Ford was basing price strongly on the fact that it was 2007, while privately the 28K low mileage drove the price. Not to mention that you don't have a dealer trying to make a profit in the middle...

I just bought a blue Platinum 4WD last week. I’m more than willing to look far and wide for what I want when it comes to buying a new car. Both to get the specific options and colors as well as the best deal. I bought 500 miles from home, flew in one-way and drove home. I haven’t bought ESP yet but the dealer I bought from said they’d meet Flood Ford’s online price for ESP.

The rebates are tied to your zip code so no matter what they are in other areas of the country, you’ll get what is tied to where you live. So happens for me, they were better than anywhere else I looked. And they weren’t specialized other than a portion being tied to using Ford Credit. I received $4500 customer cash and an additional $1250 plus $500 bonus for using Ford Credit. 0% was offered but you lost the customer cash if you took that.

I had a couple of clown-show dealers in the DC area try to add back in the $1695 destination charge from the sticker after price negotiation. “When we negotiate off sticker we always add freight back in.” I should have asked why they didn’t add the option prices back in as well. It never ceases to amaze me at the ways they try to scheme more money out of your pocket.

If you’re willing to do a little shopping around, it should be pretty easy to get one at about invoice minus whatever incentives you are entitled to receive. Invoice on a Platinum 4WD is going to be about $3300 under sticker.

Hello,

I'm a complete novice when it comes to negotiating prices especially on a vehicle of this cost.

My wife has decided she can't live with anything but a 2020 Expedition Max Platinum. We are going to purchase this vehicle and now I am just trying to figure out how to get the best deal.

I can find a few of the exact colors and configurations we want within 250 miles or so but local dealers are also stating they can get one from the other dealers also.

We have a X plan pin but can I negotiate better than this? What is the best way to negotiate these types of deals? I also have a trade in that we took to CarMax just to get a preliminary value on and they offered $14,000. Do you negotiate the purchase price then bring up the trade in and try to play those two against each other?

Basically I'm content just buying the vehicle but would love to feel like I'm getting a deal. I know it seems like inventory is scarce so am I just stuck playing close to MSRP/Invoice?

Any thoughts for me?

Beating xplan was easy on my Navi. I sent emails to 5 or so dealers with a link to a vehicle on their lot. Told them I was doing the same with 4 other dealers. Whoever could come closest to $X price would win my business.

Negotiated all of it over email/text. Took 15 mins to go grab it and sign papers. Never had to sit and play the “let me check with my manager” game.

I would check with Carvana, I bought a 2020 Explorer XLT for $30k in February and sold it this week to Carvana for $35k (with 6500 miles on it). Turned around and bought a lightly used 2019 Expedition XLT!

I took the "oldest vehicle in the inventory approach" at the end of the month. I did my research and found that a local dealer had a platinum AWD vehicle on his lot for over 10 months and he was willing to make a deal. I hate black vehicles, but he sold me an $83K vehicle for $60K and black did not seem so bad after all .

I had a friend take the same approach and lightning did strike twice.
