For Those Who Don't Think a Catch Can is Needed...? YMMV...

I changed my 2020 FX4 engine oil at 1K and added a catch-can.

The below is what it looks like/how much from the catch-can after 7K miles (2K towing a small 2,000 pound trailer). That is a standard size shot glass--and it stank like heck of raw gasoline.

I wholeheartedly agree they need them.

But some clarity, design wise they don’t produce less than the previous, it is just that the 4th Gen have the 2nd Gen 3.5TT, that has Port in addition to Direct Injection. The Port injectors in addition to providing more fuel at high load demand, they have the secondary result of washing the intake valves and decreasing buildup that sits on them.

Yes, best thing to do is prevent it from getting there in the first place with a catch can.

Which one did you install? I still haven’t picked one up as I don’t drive much and it just slips my mind.

First week I owned my 4th gen expy I installed a JLT catch can. I'm affirm believer that if you take care of your ride early on it will still be taking you places 10-15+ years later!

I would like to see a 5K mile oil analyst without the catch can and then one with the catch can after another 5K.

@Fozzy you volunteering your baby (expy) for this? I’d like to see the results though...

TTBOMK, the catch can has nothing to do with the oil inside your engine, since it ingests the oil caught above back into the intake valves & combustion chamber, reducing octane and causing carbon buildup, etc. Previous 3.5s had it worse, but the new gens have fixed the carbon buildup by injecting gas before the port cleaning the valve.

Either way, not good to ingest, regardless.

this is all oil blow by caught in the PCV system. They are a must if you want a healthy engine. Also cleaning MAP sensor bc that gets blow by all over it too
