Hey ya'll,

6 months ago our 5.4L 2014 XLT Expy EL starting lighting up in wrench mode. It was throwing off the code P0123. I replaced the TPS with an authentic motorcraft replacement (Part #DY1164).

This week, the car started going in to limp mode again. Sure enough, it's throwing off P0123 again.

Do you think I have a bad replacement TPS? Or is there something else that could be wrong?

We've probably put 5000 miles on it since I replaced the first TPS. The vehicle has about 120,000 miles on it.

Thanks in advance.

Could be the throttle body is worn and letting the throttle move to far open or closed. Or there's wear in the throttle shaft. Check it out.

Probably just a bad part though, as there's not much mileage on the thing and wear on the throttle body is not common.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0123 code
  • Not visually inspecting connections and wiring first

  • Not scanning, documenting and clearing codes, then retesting for them to verify failures

  • Not verifying and repairing wiring or connector problems after sensor is replaced

  • Replacing the TPS sensor without making sure it is the problem

  • Not verifying whether the TPS sensor A and B circuit voltages are within specification before and after repair or replacements.

Thanks for submitting this. Do you (or anyone) have part numbers for the wiring connector? Also, what should the A and B circuit voltages be? All things I can check on. Is there a TSB or repair procedure out there for this?

Quick update: I disconnected the battery and the TPS, looked over the sensor, wiring, connections, etc, and then reconnected. That seems to have satisfied the wrench light for now, but I've gone ahead and ordered another TPS since they aren't expensive if you get them online...you just have to wait.

Sounds like the best plan...........:)

I had this, the AC Blower Moto Control Module, and the wiper motor linkage all break down in the last two weeks. Pretty much right at ~110,000 miles. Fortunately those are all easy repairs.

Alright, I'm back. It's been exactly a month since I replaced the TPS sensor (again) with another Ford TPS sensor (again). The expy is firing up in limp mode again. Everything else looks okay. Any thoughts on what could be causing so many TPS faults? Maybe replace the wiring harness this time? I'm able to reset it for a few days by disconnecting the battery and tps for a few minutes and then reconnecting it all. But that's just a band-aid fix.
