I think I've got a GEM problem, is there a way to diagnose it? I've got a 2001 Expedition. On Saturday it ran fine, but on Sunday it acted like the battery was completely dead when I tried to start it. The gauges didn't light up or anything. After a few tries, it started up, but there was a burning smell and the radio kept turning up and down and getting dim and bright each time. Because of the burning smell, I shut it off. I tried again today and it's acting dead again. I checked with a multimeter and the battery was good.

Some searching led me to reading about the GEM problem. I've never noticed water in the cab, but maybe it has leaked. I've got a Bluetooth dongle and tried to check for engine codes, but it won't connect to the ECU. The dongle lights up though, so the OBD plug has power. I've got a USB charger in the accessory plug that's also lit up, so it has power too.

Is there a way to test the GEM once I pull it? Will any gen 1 Expedition GEM work? Will a similar F150 GEM work?

A burning smell is not good. It is a sign of faulty wiring. Better examine all wires under the dash or if you can't find it, localize the possible source and if needed, remove the dashboard.

If you use a F150 GEM module you will not be able to operate the rear defroster, wiper or washer. Also if your Expedition is a 4WD you'll need to make sure you get one with that option.

I pulled the GEM and fuse block and looked at them. I didn't see any signs of water and I've never seen any on the carpet. I put everything back together and tried to jump start it. It was real slow to start, but it finally fired. I noticed the ABS and airbag lights wouldn't shut off, I couldn't get it out of park, and the 4x4 switch did nothing. Any clues for my next lead?

I would opt for a replacement GEM. According to FoMoCo they are no longer available, (must have run out given the constant demand!):disgust:

Anyhow you might keep your fingers crossed and try EBay or the "junkyard hotline" at your local auto dismantler. Write the number down off of your GEM and stick with that number as you may very well experience what I did when the local Ford dealer replaced mine and again that was no rear washer, wiper or defroster. Best of luck, mine is currently down again so if you find a source for these please let me know.
