I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Limited. After sitting for a couple of days, 3/4 tank of gas, I got in it and it was dead on E. I thought someone siphoed my gas. I was able to drive it to the gas station while it displayed this error and put about 10 bucks in it until it was full, just to confirm that someone didn't steal my gas. My big fear is I've been reading where someone will be driving along and all the sudden the truck will shut off. My question is, since it let me drive during that error is that a real possibility on slightly longer trips? This is the first time I've ever seen that error. It has done wonky things..seems to be affected by rain and moisture including but not limited to, issues with theft system and door locks and the power windows.

Sounds like your float has gone bad. The fuel level sending unit is part of the fuel pump. If you show no other symptoms, it sounds like an indication problem. It's time to drop the tank and check the pump/sending unit. if you remove the pump, you can check the resistance across the float as it moves up/down. Not sure of your values, but they are usually around 10-100 ohms.

May not solve your problem, but disconnect one battery cable for 1-2 minutes, reconnect.
