Just got an update that the turbo came in this morning and the lead tech will be working on it with the goal of finishing up install this afternoon or early tomorrow morning. So far so good with this dealer who is new to me.

So, I hope to have the truck back tomorrow with TSB work done and a new driver's side turbo. Plus folding mats and roof cross bars just in time for a Christmas tree...

Based on the last few weeks of threads I'll be checking oil levels, coolant levels, and looking for leftover bolts laying near the base of the windshield. :)

I got the truck back and startup sounds great. Nice and quiet!

I still get a rattle at idle that doesn't go away and can be demonstrated with a few little blips of the throttle - this is even after the driver's side turbo was replaced. It sounds like a heat shield rattle still, so I'll have to crawl under there and see where it's coming from. It's the lesser of the two noises I was having, so that's a plus.

The truck also came back nice and clean in the engine bay, no oily mess or anything, so while I'm not thrilled about the rattle, I'm still happy with the quality of the work they did.

Makes me wonder, from just a quick glance in the engine bay, it kind of looks like it would be pretty easy to replace the turbo, and not touch the wastegate. The rattle i have is definitely the wastegate, which is supposed to be worked on next Monday. Have to see how things go, but I will definitely let the group know one way or another.

Alright, so on my front, the dealer replaced both turbo wastegate actuators and spring assemblies, rattle is still there. It seems a little less noisy but it's still there. Seems as though it's definitely internal (which would make sense and kind of what I've been telling them all along) that it sounds like the actual wastegate flapper is what's responsible for the rattling. So now I'll get to fight the replace my turbo battle here eventually. This is such a damn pain for a vehicle less than a year old. I'll be going on over 2 weeks in the shop now.

So just to confirm, replacing the actuators doesn’t fix it it has to be the actual flapper assembly within the turbo itself?

So new turbo needs to be the solution for all of us for the most part?

I love that they replaced my VCT for absolutely no reason other than to appease Ford. Seems like a complete waste of Fords money to fix a very small number of rattling cases when it’s pretty well known it’s the flapper. I would assume just opening the engine bay and listening at start up they’d probably hear that right away.

Exactly, 100%. Seems like Ford is telling dealers any noise at startup should be treated as the VCT issue. Funny thing is that I explicitly told my dealer that my ticking noises happen all of the time, even after driving for hours. I can't pretend to know the inner workings of the turbos but I do believe we've had a couple folks on this forum that have had their turbos replaced due to this noise and it fixed the issue. I think so far that's the only fix we've heard of. Its where I'll be headed, but my concern right now is that Ford distributed a bulletin to dealers saying that ticking noises from the turbos are normal, so effectively setting the stage that many of us experiencing this will have an uphill battle.

To your point, tearing apart half of my engine for no reason seems like such a waste and just asking for more issues in the long run, not to mention, I think I just read that warranty related work is literally Ford's largest OpEx cost today, seems like wasteful repairs should be minimized. What that might mean under the covers is that Ford knows this issue is very widespread (very close to being another Class Action like what was just announced with other Eco's) and therefore they are trying to get ahead of it before maybe bigger issues arise.
