During the last three weeks I joined Expedition Forum, which I will be eternally
grateful, and during this time I inquired about a couple of situations I had with
my Expedition. Several members responded with their thoughts and ideas about how
to deal with my situations on my Expy. I eventually was able to figure out how to
solve my promblems based on common sense and input from other users. Then I found
Forscan!

Most users of Forscan seem to acquire it simply for its ability to re-program
different modules on the Ford vehicles and customize their vehicle's different
attributes using Forscan and users' trial and error knowledge by creating spread
sheets to display their efforts. And it works great for that!! But that ain't
all folks!

Little did I know, from reading users' notes and comments on this forum that the
Forscan program allows you to do MUCH more than that! Example: during the last
couple of weeks I had a problem with a "Liftgate Ajar" warning on my 2017
Expedition's dash. I THOUGHT it was one of the two sensors on the lift gate itself
but it turned out to be the glass window in the liftgate. (I didn't even know the
glass window opened until I got into this and another user informed me that yes,
indeed the window does open.) In any case, it took me several days to acquire this
information and thusly cure my problem. (It was a dirty sensor on the window latch.)

Now comes Forscan! I have delved into the workings of Forscan and have come to find
out that Forscan will show you every sensor on the Expedition and what its current
state is! I pulled up the sensor states for all the door sensors; hood, left and
right, front and back doors, AND the sensors on the lift gate and its window! It
shows their current state (ajar or not) all printed out right in front of me! I
could have solved my liftgate ajar problem in five minutes if I had known this.
This is just a small inkling of what all Forscan can do! It is an incredible piece
of software....and it's FREE! This piece of software can display exactly
what your vehicle is doing in real time. I sat there and observed the catalytic
convertors' temperatures as I raced the engine (~700F). I can watch the fuel rail
pressure in real time, the battery voltage, transmission states, you name it,
and it goes on and on....

I see Soooooo many questions on this forum that could be answered simply and quickly
by plugging in Forscan and analyzing the sensors....in MANY cases it will tell you
exactly what the problem is just by reading the sensors and using a bit of common
sense!

People, for the price of an interface, ~ $20.00 you can have the greatest problem
solver for your vehicle! Just load Forscan onto your laptop, plug the interface
in and connect it to your OBDBII jack on your vehicle and you're there!

I have NO pecuniary interest in Forscan, any interface or anything connected with
Ford or Forscan. I just felt it was necessary to put my two cents into the pot and
let people know what they are missing! Unless I'm not seeing users' posts regarding
Forscan, I think there should be a forum branch just for adding users' information
on setting up Forscan and using it to monitor and/or display vehicle sensor data.
It is one of the best troubleshooting methods available! If more "mechanics" would
learn how to use Forscan there would be a whole lot less time wasted on nailing
down a vehicles' reported problems...

Welcome to the 21st Century, Sam. This is one advantage that comes with the complexity of modern cars. If you take the time and trouble to learn about this data it can be a lifesaver in diagnosing a problem. While others are still throwing $100 parts at problems, this kind of education can pinpoint many troubles in minutes.

Thanks for the wake up call! Happy Thanksgiving.

Cool. I never understood what OBDII "interface device" to buy in order to use all or most of whats available in Forscan so I never tried it, but I want to. I have a bluetooth BAFX device. Does that cut the mustard or do I need something else? I always thought you needed something with ELM327 to get the good stuff. Also, I think there's a free version and a paid version of Forscan ... why upgrade to the paid version if thats a simple question to answer?

There is no reason at all to "upgrade" to paid version....after the 2 month trial just renew for another 2 months. As of now
you can do that indefinitely.
As far as the interface device goes I just use one that has automatic switching between HS and MS modes...I think I paid around
$20.00 for it on Amazon....they have the ones with a manual switch for HS/MS but the automatic one works the easiest and
the older ones only have one speed....

Forscan designed their software to apply a logic signal on an unused OBDII port to signal a speed change. That signal was
applied to a small relay circuit inside the interface adapter that did a physical switch to another pin on the adapter to switch
to an alternate speed...and back...get the automatic adapter, they're cheaply priced. :)

So what device do you have?

and do you use a laptop ... windows or iOS ... or a mobile device?
the laptop is a wired connection not bluetooth
it always seemed in previous posts that you needed a laptop to get full capability
i don't have a laptop but I could buy one

why doesn't somebody make a "Forscan for Dummies" book?
for slow people like ME

I grabbed this OBDII from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G4MQCR9

For actual programming I use a laptop and the above hardwired OBDII but there is no reason you
couldn't use a desktop if you want to drag it out close to the vehicle and plug it in. I have also used
my laptop on Bluetooth when I'm just looking at some of the parameters. There are wireless bluetooth
adapters available to plug into your OBDII receptacle. I use the hard wired simply because it's faster
and less prone to error than a wireless connection.

There is also the option of using your iOS or Android but it's more limited in what you can do. It would
be great to be able to do quick readings. I haven't used the smart phone app but it is available.

As far as the "Forscan for Dummies" book goes, you really don't need one. All of the information you need
is either here on expeditionforum.com or at the Forscan site. All you have to do is spend some time
reading and I would highly recommend that you do. Hell, I'm almost 75 years old and I was able to figure
most of it out....just using the data present here and on Forscan. It just takes a bit of time to sift
through all the information. Go for it! The worst that you could do is brick your nice, new Expedition! :)
