What about a bad battery? Once my 01 would crank and start fine, but the tach and other gauges would not respond until a few seconds after starting. If the battery is weak, you may not be getting proper spark and no tach reading.

Chances are the engine would not crank with bad battery. OP said cranks but will not start.

He could have a shorted cell and be delivering a lot of current at very low cranking voltage.

Thanks Guys...

The battery was fine and we got a second opinion that was the same as the first, that it was the timing chain. So we sold it...felt like we were putting a pet down.

If you ever need to get rid of a non-running vehicle, go to carbrain.com. Easiest transaction ever and they would have had it out the same day if I didn't have a conflict.

$450. The vehicle was complete which helps. I got about a half dozen quotes ranging from $150-$450 and 2 were at $450.

A slow turning starter caused the same issues with my ‘05. I never realized how slow it was turning until I put the new starter on. I had an intermittent crank/no start for a couple of months before the starter finally went TU.

Yeah, I wouldn't think timing chains at 145k miles... be a shame if it was a wonky crank position sensor and they fixed it for $20 ....
