Hauling cargo on top of the 2nd row bucket seats

I know you said that you didn't want to do something wood and ugly, but you could built a plywood box and color match some carpet to your seat color to staple onto the outside. A drawer slides in the box opening to the forward and you can still access from drivers seats etc even.
That's what I would do if I had the buckets back there. There are spaces around my bench seat and I made containers out of cardboard and painted them flat black to match my upholstery and all my emergency stuff goes in there since there isn't much room in the jack area. Extra coil, fan belt, bottle jack, flashlight, tow rope, tools, etc. goes in those boxes.

I used black matboard for the tops of the boxes, glued the seams with Elmers, and taped them. The jumper cables and bottle jack etc is under the towel in the middle.
