I am a first time Expedition owner! I bought this 1998 Eddie Bauer edition back in September 2020. It has had difficulty shifting into second but ive learned to work around that. 2 days ago it started making a weird knocking noise when I’d let off of the accelerator & now today on my way to work it completely locked up & took a few cranks to start. I noticed the oil change place put 5W20 in it but it calls for 5W30, they also but the wrong mileage on the sticker which I thought was weird.. anyways I called them & they came out to look at it & told me I had full oil & the filter was warm so the oil is getting to the engine.. I had my oil changed over a month ago & have driven atleast 1000 miles if not more & I would think it wouldn’t be full... they told me they believe it is a rod that broke... please someone point me in the right direction cause I’m lost!!

I am far from as smart as some fellas here. I also can't speak for a certainty. But it is not likely you would lose any significant amount of oil unless you have leaks. As for it being a rod or the engine period, that is more likely. If you want to verify if the lube shop told you the truth just check the dipstick. It is very easy to locate on the driver side of the engine compartment. It will be half way back and behind the power steering reservoir. That should be labeled as such. The guys here will get to you eventually. Takes a couple days. I am a new member too. You might want to give a better description of the noise and if you felt any haptic feedback. Such as a shaking or vibrating. Also if there was a thump etc. Good luck friend. I'll be wishing good tidings your way.

It was the engine, she gave out on me.. but I was able to junk the whole truck for $800 & managed to get my hands on a 01 Excursion with low miles for a great price. Hopefully this beauty will last me longer. Not giving up on Fords just yet

Sorry to hear about your truck. The 5w-20 oil had virtually nothing to do with the damage as long as there was oil in it. The harm was either done before you owned it or its time was just up.

Your Excursion is one of the best trucks Ford ever made. Take care of it and it will take care of you. I had one for over 250,000 miles and it raised five kids with me. Best of luck with it!
