No. the valve did not drop. I will change the oil and filter on the other side of this. I have two questions: Do I need to remove the cam shaft to replace the spring? And which tool will I need to install the new string? Is this possible without removing the cam shaft?

You should probably get a Haynes or other manual before you proceed. As far as removing the cam, you might have to, or there may be a way to compress the spring while putting the new cam follower in place.

Ok, here's an update. The valve did drop. I can pull it up with a magnet, but can't hold it in place to (attempt to) install the spring. Any suggestions?

Since it did not drop out of the valve guide, rotate the engine by the crank bolt SLOWLY until the valve is all the way up in the valve guide.
Put the spring in place before bringing the valve up.
Maybe you got lucky and did not bend the valve.

Its not bent, I can slide it up and down with the magnet. I turned the crank until the lobe of the cam was highest, to give some clearance. I wasn't able to tell where TDC was on the crank. The markings I was expecting to find were not there. I did pick up an air hose adapter to put into the sparkplug socket and hold the rod in place. I'll be trying that in the morning.

I would buy a bore scope and look down and around the valve before going further. To see if the valve is bent . I suppose if you can maintain pressure with air it may be ok .

Don't forget you need a new valve stem oil seal. It shoukd also help keep the valve from slipping.

Put the other sparkplugs back in (if they are out) because the air addition may force the piston down & you want it in the highest position.
But with dual cams, it may not.
