Hi all,

I have a faulty running board on my ‘14 Expedition EL. Like others, the dealer wanted $2,500ish to fix it. I removed the running board this weekend and bought a replacement motor and bracket off eBay. It should be here Thursday.

In the interim, do y’all know an easy way to remove this pin? It connects to the rod that connects both brackets and the motor shaft.

I looked on the other ‘running board’ topics and didn’t see this question. It’s probably something simple I didn’t think of.

Thanks!

That looks easy to do. What all is coming with the motor?

The motor comes with the forward bracket and hinge. All I need to do is take the running board off the hinge and take the pin out. I bolt up the new motor and hinge and I’m off to the races.

Here’s a photo of the motor/hinge I bought on eBay.

I’m sure I can hammer and gnaw the pin out. I was hoping there was some slick way of doing it.

You can just buy the motor online and there are videos on youtube that shows you how to get the pin out. (the big pin)

May be able to use a cap head bolt with nylok nut to fit in there tight as a replacement.
Use a fine thread if possible. You do not want the head or nut to hang on anything.
I do not think the rivet that is in there will drill out w/o some problems.
I have worked with those type rivets for a long while in other applications.

I have a 14 Exp also. I have the same situation. Bought a new motor and bracket from a company I found on internet, Maxspeedingrods. The first motor and bracket is not working as it should. Motor keeps retracting the board as if there is something blocking it. Replacement is being sent.

The motor and bracket are bolted to the running board with 2 allen head screws. The setup I bought I just need to remove the bolts and replace the unit. I tried to just replace the motor but could not get the pin out so decided not worth since I could buy the whole unit for $160.

I took the whole running board off the vehicle - it’s just 8 x 13mm bolts. That gave me a chance to clean and lubricate the rear hinge assembly.

To get the rivet out that connects the running board motor to the connecting shaft to the rear hinge, I center punched the cap end and drilled it out with a 1/4” drill bit. I switched out the motor and front hinge with the assembly I bought on eBay and reconnected the shaft with a stainless carriage bolt I had on hand. I put a lock washer and nut on it, tightened it down and then cut the bolt off at the nut in order to have clearance from the car body.

I paid extra to get both the motor and the bracket. I’m glad I did. It wasn’t that much more and was still 1/10 the cost for the dealer to fix it.

So far, so good. Thanks again for the help.
