Q for the forum regarding shocks -

i've read up plenty of the threads on the stock shocks leaking, so this is more specifically aimed at the FX4 -

has anyone experienced / heard of the G4 FX4's shocks leaking as badly as the standard ones, or are they better, amazing, sort of, etc?

even deeper, just exactly how different are those shocks (& springs etc?) really?

i ask not only for the longevity factor in comparison to the standard shocks, but also for the performance / handling / towing reasons...

... and even deeper on the "short" FX4 model specifically... are the shocks / springs physically different on the FX4 whether you have the tow pkg or not..?? or are they the same "heavy duty" shock / springs for either config with just the fancy assist stuff added?

I had one of the front FX4 shocks leak and replaced at 15k miles. The other one is seeping but the dealer doesn’t want to replace it.

I am not sure about the difference in specs compared to regular ones. They are probably tuned to damped larger travel for off-road situations, which I think the do well.

The FX4 shocks are different than the standard shocks. I think the springs are mostly the same. If you spend some time at parts.Ford.com and enter a year for the expedition, it will list all of the available shocks and spring for the expedition. You may be able to decipher the descriptions. Don’t enter your VIN or it will just show what fits yours.

Springs are the same between FX4/non-FX4 models. But the springs are different between HD tow/non-HD tow. So checking the FX4 box changes the shocks. Checking the HD tow box changes the springs.

thanks - yes i’m hip to the PN variations - my curiosity on the shocks was if anyone may know whether the different shock PN was simply the same shock design, “alternately tuned” - or whether the fx4 shock was a completely different / beefier design

Yes. At 2,000 (you read that correctly, two thousand) miles my front passenger was leaking on my 2018 FX4. It was a complimentary dealer inspection so not sure how much. Did not have any other issues after that, but just upgraded to Bilstein 5100s at 50,000 miles.

this is helpful - thanks

how do you think the 5100 perform, so far, in comparison to the stock FX4's?
