So I recently noticed that my 2007 V8 Expedition is making some strange bumps while I'm cruising at around 40-60 mph in the lowest gear. At first it felt like I went over some bumps and it wasn't noticeably frequent. However, recently it has become constant (ever few seconds) and it now I'm noticing a feeling of running over mild rumble strips. There is also a slight change in RPM when any of these things happen. I find it extremely strange that all the symptoms disappear when 1) I'm in cruise control at any speed, 2) I shift into 3rd (it does it with O/D off, but very infrequently), and I'm coasting down a hill with my foot off the pedal. I don't have any MIL lights and checked the OBD II sensor with a single code for the ABS system (C1277). The engine ticks and I'm assuming I have to get the phasers changed and the A/C clutch doesn't engage. These are the only apparent issues I can see.

I'm afraid the Transmission might have to be replaced or rebuilt, which really sucks because I just purchased the vehicle (and did an extensive inspection of the vehicle), it was all fine while we drove.

Any insight into this issue would be much appreciated! Thank you!

60 mph in low gear?
Water in the plug holes can short the plugs and be mistaken for transmission trouble, has it been raining there lately ? Also you never mentioned if the plugs were ever changed. Any heavy missing issue can feel like a trans problem and it shifts OK so I am doubting that it is the transmission.

Before you mess with the fluid (which can cause issues) put in a tube of Lubegard Shudder Fix. What you're feeling is probably the torque converter issue that's common in these and so many cars with higher miles.

Check spark plugs. Replace if over 60k on them. It’s common for an engine miss to feel like transmission. Other connected issue could be a coil pack. I found that using a code reader that can read the mode6 memory in the Fords is helpful. It keeps track of problems that haven’t reached code status yet to trip the check engine light. Find a blue tooth code reader on Amazon and get the forscan light program for your phone and you can take a quick browse pretty inexpensively.
