The door lock mechanism is connected to the cylinder with metal rods held with plastic clips. You have to pull of the inside panel and see what's not connected. My bet would be the little crank on the cylinder is slipping. You may need a new lock cylinder which can be bought and keyed to match the old one.
The problem is that you'll have to pull the panel once to see what's going on, once again after you get the new parts. And you may have to pull the passenger side door panel to see what it's supposed to be like if you can't figure it our. Not hard, just a bit of work for something so simple.
