Which is better for off-roading with the 2nd Gen Expedition?

I can see the advantages to traction control for unexperienced drivers in snow, but from what I can tell it turns a 3 wheel drive 4X4 into a 2 wheel drive 4X4.

How hard would it be to install e or air lockers for the front and rear diffs? Would i need new differential housings?

Prolly don't want my opinion but I think advanctrac is trash. So I guess, limited slip? To me anyways...

I have never taken any vehicle that did not have a limited slip rear off road. As a software engineer i find it disconcerting that software is supposed to help me better control my traction where roads are optional than a mechanical option.

Most of the time when I leave pavement in the expy I just shut that advanctrac off its no good if a wheel goes in the air or if you need to floor it up a hill or if the wheels are underwater... I should say though, on pavement it is a pretty decent system

I would prefer limited slip personally. I don't trust electronic traction control particularly a system that uses the abs. If you have a locker installed make sure advancetrac is disabled.

It depends on what you want I think. The Advancetrac is great on-road during slippery conditions and such. But I may agree that a mechanical diff lock system would be better in offroad conditions where you may have situations where one or two wheels can be lifted off the ground. The majority will never see such conditions though. :)

Agree with prior posters. I've had both third and second gen. Third had all the computerized wizardry via advance/stabilitrack. Second gen (often) does not have the computers and instead a LS rear end.

On slippery roads, advancetrac works good for most drivers. However if you get aggressive or go off-road, there are situations where the computer systems might get fooled and work against you. I'd trust my second gen to get me around offroad better. The third gen with computers is really easy to drive in the snow and would be my preference if I had a significant other behind the wheel.

I like the second gen tranny better as well. Less shifting, feels stouter.

Third gen rides smoother, better insulation, more attractive interior. Feels less like a truck than the second gen.

My 2 cents anyway.

Thank you for the feedback. I have solved my dilemma by acquiring an 86 Bronco. That has the aftermarket support to be a good wheeler.

I recently upgraded from gen1 to gen2 and I have this newfangled "AdvancedTrac" feature. When off-road do you all typically just disengage AT? From the few times it's kicked in I found it pretty annoying.

When disengaged, does the rear act like an open diff or limited slip? Car came with the manual so I know a little about AT, but interested if there are any hacks I should be aware of.

AdvanceTrac equipped will be an open diff. Only the H6 axle code has the limited slip in the 2nd gen.
