Question came up and wanted some opinions *(sorry for the previous misspellings and errors)*

I once had a serviceman (owner) provide me a quote on a home item for installation. The man showed up in a brand new, suburban sized Escalade (I know he owned it because we also spoke about him towing his boat with it, etc).

At the time, I thought his work quote was too high and later called my friend about it. I made the comment that was why I guessed the guy was able to afford a $90+K truck (etc).

My friend said it should not matter what the man drove as to the quote because it simply might mean he was a successful business man--and who cares if he drove a Porsche or a Ferrari--he might simply be a car enthusiast.

I tend to feel that any sign of deliberate excess during certain types of financial negotiation simply has bad optics (I don't judge people--but I do observe and make my considerations based on many other factors).

Of course some here are driving $50-100K+ machines and maybe even some use them as work trucks, but in a case where YOU were looking for some type of service, would an excessive vehicle cause YOU to pause and have an effect?

I'm not concerned about his finances, but about his character. A guy displaying ostentatious excess in his financial choices is almost always not a person I would seek to employ. I might consider this a flaw in his judgement.

I would not judge a person by the car they drive, nor the house they live in.

I think I would try to determine his character during the discussion and then decide whether I wanted to complete a transaction with them.

I have co-workers where we all make around the same amount where one drives a Porsche and another a Prius.

In your case, was he posturing and showing off? Or was he just comfortable and displaying he is a successful person? I also tend to agree with your friend and that he may just be a car enthusiast versus someone who is not.

Would it have changed your mind if he showed up in a 1932 Ford Deuce that has been chopped, dropped, and swapped with newer technology? That type of car is probably quite a bit more than an Escalade by $20-30K.

Most of the subcontractors I work with drive nice trucks. Nice truck means they run a good business and make a lot of money because they are good at what they do and get hired for their skill. If you show up in a rust bucket that looks like it might belong to a crackhead I might think twice about going with you. Business owners take on a lot of risk. Risk brings reward when done right. All I care about is the number and that you are showing up and complete the scope of work.

I received some top notch work from a landscaper that drove a Porsche. He was only one with the balls to prove the job and I was glad he did and came through. I’d use him again without hesitation. BTW he had plants delivered and worked out of the Porsche himself.

If they are that good they deserve a nice truck. YOU drive a 2020 which to me, a guy ecstatic I could upgrade from a 2000 to a 2009, means you obviously make too much money also :biggrin::biggrin:

While I am sure you cast your votes already, it has almost nothing to do with what they drive personally it has to do with what they are driving up in when negotiating something (a service) they want to sell you. It has nothing to do with what you roll out to where you work (unless your job involves showing up to a persons home and trying to sell them something).

Plenty of Doctors drive Buicks, Hyundais and McLarens, but as a patient you would never see either in their parking lot. That is not germane to the discussion here.

I apologize, as I worded this thing quite poorly--but I hope the gist of it remains.
