We live in cold country with our ‘08 Limited and folding boards. I believe that they are extremely climate sensitive - when cold out they always need a gentle toe to close them. Or a bumpy road to jiggle them shut.

However, we’ve found generous applications of penetrating OIL, seems to work best. Liberally spray all hinge points, shinny bits and gaps in the hinges. Then as it warms up above 32 they seem to work just fine.

I had trouble with the driver side running board. Bought a new motor with bracket attached and installed it. That did not work correctly. Found a number of the nuts and allen screws to be loose. Tightened them but there was already a crack in the bracket. Got a replacement and made sure everything was tight. Now the board retracts but opens up again as if something is blocking it. Cleaned and lubed the rear bracket before reassembly to the truck. Even unplugged the board as I thought it had to reprogram but still does it. However when i put it in drive and hit 5mph the board retracts

I like the Scott Carden fix, may try on drivers side (working but grinds rather loud). Passenger side replaced July 2019 eBay $69 USA shipper made in China of course) works great and quiet still.

Keeping the linkages doused in Motorcycle chain oil will protect them. The special oil has a very thin "carrier" fluid that takes the lube into all nooks/crannies.

Mine are almost 5 yrs old w/ 112K and work flawlessly. Since it's time for it's Spring wash, I'll spray them again once it's nice & dry.

One more comment from me about the running boards.

Our passenger side motor gave up the ghost last year, and rather than order the $800 part from Ford, we bought the Chinese knock-off for about $225.

Got sent the wrong part. Left side rather than right side. But got to looking at it and realized that it would fit. In fact, it moved the motor away from right behind the wheel well and got it out of the direct line of all the dirt, dust, rain, snow etc that came off the wheel.

works like a champ that way. You may want to consider that mod as an option.

Good tip, I'll remember that for the future.

Side note....that screen is SICK. How did you do that?
