Hey all, a couple weeks ago, a mile away from my house (thank god) on my way back from a 1200 mile road trip, I had flashing check engine light, severe reduced power, loud ticking, and I basically rolled into the driveway. I have a Bluetooth OBD scanner plugged in, so I checked the codes, here’s what I had:

I brought it in the next morning, mechanic replaced the #6 coil (just barely still under warranty at 96000 miles), this solved the codes and flashing check engine light, but I still have the obnoxious clicking and the engine really sounds rather terrible. I think I’ve read somewhere on here that these ecoboosts suffer from the same cam/chain tensioner “fatal flaw” that the 5.4L 3valves have. My mechanic thinks it’s the timing chain after listening to the it through the valve cover, too. Has anyone had issues with their truck (for what seems to me) this early? I’ve changed it with 5w/30 Full synthetic every 5000 religiously. Thanks.

The EcoBoost doesn’t have the same issue but similar. The EcoBoost tends to stretch the chain. The 5.4 tensioner gaskets blow out and fail to tension the chain adequately. Both have known chain problems at the end of the day yes just different causes.

Gotcha. Thankfully 3k left on the warranty, but damn, she sounds like shit right now.

No exhaust manifold leak or anything right? The P0022 says it is timing related though, that would be bank 2 intake phaser is over-retarded. Just be sure they do their diligence so it’s fixed good once.

@JExpedition07 an update from Ford. It’s a “rod knock”. Wasn’t given much more info, just a voicemail, but they’re looking into a new engine if I understood correctly.
