Ouch. What a bad time. You are going to be paying MSRP for a 2022 in the current market so that’s quite a loss between the 2020 and a new unit. The big thing is everyone is ok of course, but the market is a MESS right now.
Maybe he had replacement value on his insurance?

If I am not mistaken, at least here in Ontario, the additional coverage you pay for the replacement value on auto endorsement is so that there is no depreciation applied to the vehicle if totaled. Hence, if your original purchase price was 75k, you will get 75k instead of a depreciated percentage applied towards purchase price.

Yikes, glad to hear you and the family are OK.

I have a 2022 XLT on order for below invoice. The order was confirmed on 11/12. It still hasn't progressed to "Scheduled for Production". Has anyone else's order moved yet?

Wow, sorry to hear about the accident, but glad to hear the family is OK. I agree with your stance to keep quiet for now until responsibilities and liabilities are settled. My wife was hit about 14 months ago and totaled our 26,000 mile 2015 Expy. We so loved that truck, then we took a massive loss as the insurance company wouldn’t really consider the low miles and excellent condition. In their eyes it was “Average”. We bought a low mile 2017 within a couple of weeks of the accident. The good news is the new one is worth way more than we paid for it now. Good luck to you!

Would ‘replacement value’ also cover some obnoxious markups on vehicles that dealers are posting? (Anecdotal, so may not be prevalent).
I would argue that it should, I mean these are unprecedented times however so it might actually be an argument with the insurance. Technically, "replacement value rider" on your policy (at least here in Alberta) essentially gets you back into the same vehicle in the current year without additional charge to you. So if I am driving a 2019 Expedition Max plati and its totalled, I would get the exact same vehicle but in 2021 MY. The insurance would just cut you a cheque for what the value of the current year expy is. I know this for a fact that is how it works because I had to use this before.
