Hi guys, Im trying to find the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor on my 08 Expe. If anyone has any idea please enlighten me. I found the Cylinder Head Temp. Sensor.(CHT) but the ECT sensor is driving me crazy!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting any DTC codes ? There are two temperature sensors on some 3V motors. One is the CHT sensor up on the passenger side cylinder head. The other is the oil/coolant temperature sensor on the passenger side of the engine oil pan. Takes a 1 1/8" wrench to loosen it ( oil may come out ....). Be very careful when you reinstall it because it IS only plastic, and has an O-ring seal. So just snug is good enough.

Im getting codes PO119 & PO1289. I’ll be changing CHT sensor as I put a ECT sensor in its place because thats what they sold me, smh. Is it mandatory that I use the ECT you posted or can I use the after market ones that Ive already purchased? WTA1032 is CHT sensor and WTC1015 is ECT sensor.

You put the plastic sensor in the cylinder head ?

This is the CHT sensor that goes in the head ....

That shorter stubby one you have there goes in the 2V heads on the earlier 5.4L motors, not your 3V head.

This is the female plug on the ECT sensor that's in the oil pan..... I've never tried to do what you're asking...

Ok, Ive got it. I put the right one in there. I’ll pick up the plastic one in the morning and put it in as you instructed. Thank you so very much.

Hi guys, Im back again. I thought things were looking up until I looked up under my truck, and theres no sensor on the passenger side of the engine oil pan‍. Any ideas on where it could possibly be? Check engine lights still on, temperature light goes off and on. I was originally getting code PO119 coolant temp sensor. After changing CHT, started getting code PO1289 for it. Ive also changed the thermostat. Im lost!

You didn't see it on either side of the oil pan ?
I went and checked and only the '04 and '05 model years used that one in the oil pan.
Sorry, I wasn't sure what year yours was when I posted above.

Ok. I think you may be looking at a CHT plug or harness issue. Did you notice any damage or chaffing of the CHT wiring when you replaced the CHT under the manifold ? I don't know if you can move the harness much at the rear but I'm suspecting a CHT plug or plug pin, or wire chaff problem. I included the troubleshooting section from the service manual for you to look at. Is the temp gauge on the cluster behaving weird ? Are you familiar with ForScan ? Do you have a laptop ? It's a free program for Fords. ForScan Download Page

Yes I have a laptop and will def download that app. And yes temp gauge acts wonky. It’ll stay in normal range then fall back to cold. Ive noticed that when it falls like that the coolant symbol lights up. But it immediately goes off when temp hand goes back to normal. I didn’t notice anything with the wires but I’ll check them out tomorrow. Thank you.
