I've had this truck for 3 years now and it's never had heat that works (front or rear). It's been a fixer upper. I'm trying to troubleshoot and be certain the front heater core needs replacing before pulling the trigger on the parts cannon. A/C works great. It ran hot in the beginning of summer due to a leaking radiator. When that happened, I had the radiator, radiator hoses, water pump, and thermostat replaced. Now it runs great again, just no heat still. I've had the system flushed several times (at least they said they did). I've flushed the rear myself and gotten a lot of debris from the rear core. I flushed the lines from the front to the back until they were clear. Just yesterday I replaced the rear core. I vacuum filled the system with coolant to hopefully get all or most of the air out. I verified that the rear blend doors work while I had that apart. For about 10 minutes the rear air started to warm up then got cold again. Someone suggested checking the heater control valve but I can't find it. It's supposed to be in the line right before the firewall but nope. The lines hook right to the core. This is where I'm getting stumped. It was suggested to me that it may be underneath at the rear but I haven't checked that yet. I have been searching the internet for info but there is very little on this subject and model.
So I told you all that to ask you this...is there a possibility the valve is underneath the vehicle? My mobility has been limited due to a knee replacement and I don't want to get down on the ground if I can avoid it. Also it has the electronic temp controls. Any help would be appreciated.

Check the blend door as it defaults to the AC when it fails. Dealt with it on a Lincoln I had. Not sure on your Expedition , as I have an 01 but if there is a valve it will be on the heater hose inside the engine compartment. Blend door motors are not expensive, but tend to be a challenge to get to.

Update. After getting frustrated and walking away from it I continued reading posts in the forum. Decided to try and burp the coolant. Parked it on an incline and held it at around 2000 rpm for a couple of minutes then let it idle and repeated. Then the rear heat started working. Still nothing from the front so I'll get that core changed out and hopefully will be good to go. Now I've got to put it all back together.

Greye, thanks for the input.

No worries and I hope the core change goes easy as heat isn't much of an option if you are anywhere but Florida or south Texas.

I have a 2003 Expedition XLT with front and rear heat and cooling. When I first got my hands on it from my grandson it had a no heat or A/C condition. Flushed the coolant several times thinking the heater core might be plugged, still no heat. It ended up be the blend doors one up front behind the glove box and radio and two in the rear on the rear unit. I had no A/C at the time and that has been my last project which I finished recently. There is also a vacuum line located on mine, back at the rear of the engine compartment rt side that operates a vacuum canister that controlled my dash vents that the heat and A/C flow. Good luck !

Thanks SlivaRich. My rear heat is now working well. Just finished putting it back together yesterday. Not going to tackle the front right now.
