I had my first set of cam phasers replaced before 20k miles on my 18 platinum. Then I had to have them redone at approx 30k miles.

I thought there was an updated part that was supposed to prevent this from continuing to occur. Did I just get unlucky and not receive the upgraded part the first time or is this going to continue to happen?

I don't want to get into the root cause of this problem as it has been well documented here about oil pressure (or lack there of) etc.

Who here has had multiple replacements? How many times? And do you think you will keep your vehicle past warranty expiration?

2018 XLT here. I think I posted this somewhere, but can't find it. Bought mine with about 34,000 miles on it. Dealer did not tell me it had the driver side cam phaser and chain replaced. Get the vehicle home and about a week later the notorious diesel rattle on start up shows up. Called a sales buddy at ford, gave him my vin and he looked it up in the system and asked me if I knew that it already had the left side work done. I said no and was pissed the dealer had not told me. Took it down to them, ford replaced under warranty the right side. So I am sitting in the GMs office fuming mad and after a 2 hour long conversation, I leave with a Ford ESP warranty for 5 year 100K. I was happy/still mad cause if I would have known I would not have bought it in the first place. This was in 2019. Last year sometime the rattle ensued again and I took it in, paid my $100 deductible to get it fixed again. The service guy said they had 6 in line for the same repair, but all were older than 20-21s and that the issue seemed to have been resolved. Regardless, my 2022 order is built, waiting on chip and I will be trading this thing in. Currently 74k miles. Hope that helps but alot of the issues around here are from the 2018s. Mine has had every single one I think. It is time to go and I would not trust it past the 100K warranty.

You had 6 sets before 20k on odometer?
Maybe it was 25K, I can't remember, but it was dang low milage. It also got a new engine, and Lincoln was so courteous that they put a "remanufactured" engine in it. Real neat...

Awaiting parts for my vehicles third set of cam phasers.

And no, the ‘new’ parts don’t matter, as it is a well-documented oil flow problem. Not enough oil getting TO the cam phaser, so it really doesn’t matter what upgraded part they throw at it. It’s still going to fail again.

And after this time, I’m selling.

The only way I’d keep it is if they did a top engine rebuild with heads/cams for a 2021 3.5. Or, if the newer designed head is not compatible on a 2018 engine, then they would have to completely replace it with a long-block of 2021 or newer design.

Even with a “brand new” or reman 2018 engine, I’d sell it as soon as they gave it back to me.

And I’m pissed about it, because when everything is working right, it’s a great machine.

Are you sure they fixed the issue in 2021??is there an updated part number for the head?

I really question if the head is the fix. All cars with this type variable cam phaser system from Japanese to German use a pin that locks the phasers when the engine turns off and there’s no oil pressure. On cranking, the pin is sprung loaded and locks the sprocket to not let it wind back and push the oil out and holds the phaser where it needs to be. The Ford sprockets that are noisy all have damaged pins and it looks like a very weak stamped steel pin that’s not very strong as well as the area the pin locks into. Until they update that, you can supply all the oil you want to the phaser but all you’ll do is lessen the time it rattles but the problem is still there. I think they need to get the phaser pin issue sorted out and wonder if the late 2020’s have a different style?

If you have a cam phaser repair now, is the engine updated to the current production engines?
