There are two part numbers for the radiator. I think the radiator also supplies water to the water/oil heat exchanger on the transmission so by upgrading the radiator you also upgrade the transmission cooling. I personally don't think the transmission cooler on this is very robust. Under normal circumstances I am sure it is fine but I think there could be a better option. I think the raptor has a separate transmission cooler.

I had HD Tow on a 2013 Max and ran it across NW Texas last summer with a large rented trailer. The steady incline was very demanding on the truck. The truck always shuttered randomly at low speeds even when not towing and the issue was never diagnosed after repeated attempts. I ended up losing the truck in a catastrophic hail storm and wasn’t sad to see it go.

Also, I've had some similar issues, not while towing though. The codes mine threw had nothing to do with tranny, in fact it was with emissions control junk. And literally I was at about the same RPM as the OP, trying to accelerate up a hill in CO. Went into limp mode and shook the whole rig multiple times.

This is why I now travel with at least one device that can pull and reset codes (both my tuner and a cheap Amazon sourced OBD scanner). I pulled over, read the codes, reset the codes and bam, was able to drive to my destination fine. These things seem to be incredibly touchy! I would have assumed that if the tranny was overheating, the gauge cluster would have notified the driver of that condition, as it doesn't happen instantly, it would have been a condition that would have progressed over a period.
I had this same issue. The gauges didn’t accurately read temperature until we were overheated

Just went through the same issues with my 2019 Limited with Tow Package. It appears that there are a few service bulletins related to the transmission - all covered by warranty. I had been complaining since 20K. Mine would not shift smoothly between 4 / 5 / 6. Then one day went shifted from reverse into drive to head up hill (no tow), it would appear to go into gear, but no power to transmission. Turned vehicle off/on. Shifted just fine, but a wrench dash warning light appeared. Headed carefully up the hill to the house. Called the dealer back (had just been in for service and another complaint about the jerky transmission) and he said it would have to go into the larger Ford service center two hours away for repair/replacement. I made it the two hours to the next dealer - cruise control engaged (downhill the entire way). Had the option of an expensive tow. Requires 3 days to repair Gave me a loaner, had tome additional 50 K service work done, so it took a week - am extremely happy with the tested result and service and in addition and they detailed the car!

The transmission recently failed in my 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 - purchased new with the HD towing package, but NEVER used for towing.

I realize it is a different year and has a different transmission.

The vehicle began bucking and shuddering when attempting to lightly accelerate on level ground, from about 40 mph. When going up a grade (not mountainous), it would also shudder severely when trying to accelerate.

The vehicle had 92,*** miles on it - and the dealer had changed the transmission fluid and filter at 75,*** miles (not a flush). The vehicle is used strictly for passenger use.

I made an appointment with my Ford dealer and when the technician was driving the vehicle to diagnose it, the transmission failed and went into limp-mode.

It took the Ford dealer 42 days (after diagnosis) to repair the transmission due to lack of parts from Ford.

In my experience changing transmission fluid is not recommended unless the fluid has been burned which in that case there are other transmission issues. A lot of mechanics talk about new transmissions as they wear develop sludge type crust that sits in various areas of the transmission, which are basically harmless sitting in there glue like blobs. But these blobs contain abrasive particles from transmission break in and wear. When the fluid is replaced the new fluid has new solvents that break down these blobs and the fluid then becomes abrasive and does damage to the transmission.

To each his own but the only time I had a transmission fail early was when I performed all the preventative maintenance on it.
All the others like my old 82 chevy diesel truck went 300k on the same trans. In fact it went to the junk yard with the original trans.

Sorry for the delayed update....
I sent my wife to take a flight from Midland to Austin 230p Friday Apr 29 afternoon to ensure she made it home to start a new job on the following Monday since it was going to be a crapshoot whether the fuel pump arrived in time to get installed by EOB Friday.

Sewel was fantastic keeping me updated and after the fuel pump arrived around 11a Friday. The service manager got my truck next in line with his service tech. They called me at 5p to tell me my truck was ready and to tell me they were sending a car to pick me up from the RV park where I was waiting with our dog to get the truck back.

I got the truck back and was connected to the RV around 630p. After contemplating waiting until the following morning to leave, I said f'it and pulled out for Austin.

Everything was running great and smooth when I hit the road. When cruising at 65, I was able to go full throttle to test the conditions that previously caused it to choke and stutter into limp mode with good response and no rough shifting.

About 60 miles in just outside of Sterling City while in cruise control at about 70mph, it suddenly started missing and the truck slowed down to about 50mph. I pulled into Sterling City and found an Alon gas station and called my wife who unbelievably was still at the Midland airport to let he know the continuing problem.

I then tried calling the Service Manager at Sewell Ford (Michael Fabbri). He unbelievably picked up his cell at 730p on a Friday as he was driving to his lake house for the weekend. I told him what was going on and then he said he would call me back. He called back about 20 minutes later and said he spoke to his service tech that worked on my truck. The service tech believed that it was likely missing on 1 or more cylinders (I was due to replace plugs and boots 60k and I was at 70k). He suggested that I try to get to an Auto Parts dealer to get an OBDC code to confirm that it was missing on one or more cylinders, but he said that is that if it was I should be OK to keep on trucking.

I pulled out of Sterling City to keeping heading home. I was able to avoid any missing stuttering by keeping my speed at 60 and below. I arrived in San Angelo about 830 where I found an O'Reily's and after about 20 minutes waiting to get the attention of one of the parts desk guys, they tried to get the error code from my truck. After 20 minutes trying to get the reader to read the codes with no success, I said I needed to keep going and punted. I was able to get home by keeping it under 60 all the way to Austin. I pulled into my driveway at 230a overly caffeinated from Diet Dr Pepper and a salt pruned mouth from eating Sunflowers all the way home to keep from falling asleep on the road.

As for the comments regarding the lack of working brake trailer on the 4531 lb trailer, unbelievably I never really felt unsafe even when having to hard brake a few times while in Albuquerque and the only issue I had was the anti-locks kicking in. I am a conservative driver who always looks way ahead so I am very rarely surprised when driving and tend to have a very light touch on the brakes (I had a 15yo Isuzu Rodeo with 200k miles that had only one brake job at 160k miles). I will be getting and installing the Ford brake controller before I tow again though, I am not stupid.

It took me until Memorial day weekend to finally get the time to change out the plugs and boots. I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of the plug replacement especially after with dealing with 4 broken plugs on my Triton equipment 2006 Expy. After the plug replacement, the truck feels very solid and a slight bit more responsive on the throttle but until I can tow again, I won't feel 100% confident.

I can't say enough about the serviced at Sewel Ford... Michael Fabbri and Sewell Ford has been the best customer service experience I have experienced in a very, very long time. Do not go to Rogers if you are in the Midland/Odessa area. Why waste the time when there is such a better option available 15 minutes down the road.

So an update:
- Rogers Ford sucks and I am going to give a detailed feedback on yelp. DO NOT GO TO THIS Dealer
- Sewel Ford in Odessa listended to my situation and after getting refused to be allowed to even talk to a service manager at Rogers Ford, Michael Fabbri at Sewel not only got my truck in right away, but got a service tech working on it while I was there. They determined it is my tank mounted Fuel pump and they ordered the part yesterday (THU) coming from Dallas.

They called me at 9a today and they are going to have it installed and ready to go this afternoon (FRI). I cant say enough about how great the service at Sewel Ford in Odessa has been. They drove me to the RV park after getting my truck in and are going to send a car to come and get me when it is ready,

mr_dave I attached my window sticker here. I have confirmed I have the 3.73 rear differential from the rocker sticker I also have the 7 pin trailer hitch which is indicative of what Ford calls the Class IV Heavy Duty Tow package even though is it listed as just Calss IV Tow package on the windows sticker. I would like to confirm this but Fors ETIS doesn't appear to work for listing all functional features any longer.

If anyone can assist with definitive confirmation, it would be most appreciated.
My next call to Lombard Ford is going to see if I can add-on loaner vehicle to my ESP program coverage
My in-laws broke down in a 04 suburban towing in the desert in so cal. Turns out the fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel itself on a lot of these cars where the pump is in the fuel tank, so if you let it get below let's say half a tank, it over heats and dies, mainly a towing problem.
