There are several leftover 2021 new expeditions in the dealerships nearby with much cheaper price comparing the 2022 models. My main concerns are the tiny 8" screen with SYNC3 for 2021 and value depreciation.

I heard SYNC3 is much worse than SYNC4 on the 2022. On top of that the resolution of the screen is much lower. Anyone had side by side comparison of these two systems?

If I keep this vehicle for at least 5 years, faster depreciation of 2021 model is really a serious problem?

Thanks.

None of what you said is wrong. Sync 4 is much better that Sync 3 (as it should be). However, I don't personally care for the implementation of the 4A in the Expedition. Can't stand the big tablet look and not being integrated into the dash. The 21 and newer F150's are much nicer, IMO.

As far as depreciation goes, I don't see how there will be much of a difference other than the model years.

The 2022s come with Sync 4 and 4a as Rob alluded to. Sync 4 is a 12 inch screen and retains hard buttons below it. Sync 4a is the larger 15 inch screen which pretty much eliminates most of the hard buttons. I suggest you do some YouTube searches. There are quite a lot of reviews on both sync setups. F150, Mach E, and Expedition reviews go over them. You can then determine if that is worth buying one vs the other

Agreed! I think the huge screen looks tacky. Like Ford just slapped a tablet on the dash. It looks like a Red Green improvement project. And I like having some buttons to perform simple functions, like adjusting temperature and changing the radio station. I don't mind the small screen, I think it's just right.

I've had sync 4a with the big screen for about a month now. I previously had a 2019 Expedition and to me, the upgrade to the bigger screen and the updated sync system by itself was worth the upgrade in vehicles. I felt like the previous version looked and performed like a very dated system - in fact this was the one thing I disliked from the day I bought the 2019. The new one is responsive and intuitive with a very modern/techy look. It only took me a few hours really to get used to not having physical buttons and nearly every gripe I had with the old system has been addressed. There are still a couple of things I think they could improve (camera functions/ease of switching from front to back camera for example), but overall I'm very happy.

I am a tech person in general and prefer to have the latest/greatest, so if that doesn't really matter to you, the other upgrades in the 2022 are fairly minor in my opinion. I do like the updated styling of the front end and I went with the stealth appearance package which I really like, but I do not notice a lot of difference in the drive or general features of the vehicle.

Two side notes - a feature that I lost in the 2022 is the ability to change the ambient lighting color. Not a huge deal to me, but my kids always enjoyed picking the color. Not sure why they got ri of this ? Maybe a chip shortage issue? The other note is that I did recently have some type of electrical/sound system issue where my speakers starting making a horrible and loud noise that I could not get to stop for about 5 minutes. It hasn't happened again, but there were a couple of other one off glitches which does worry me that there may be some kinks that need worked out.

I put down a deposit on a 22 limited with the 15.5". The window sticker says it comes with ambient lighting...is that the color changing then?

No. They stopped the ability to change the color in the 2020 model. 2019 was the last year that could be changed. It is a completely different module/part number. Additionally, I think someone tried to put a 2019 light in the 2020 and the programming was just not there to change it In ForScan.

That's weird. Why even list ambient lighting if it's just normal cabin lights?
