Does anyone have recommendations for products for general parts cleaning that don't require special licenses or buying in huge quantities? Alkaline phosphate solutions or anything like that? Thanks.

Since you didn't specify what part or how many I'd offer BrakeClean, Starting fluid, electrical cleaner and the like.

Also ordinary paint thinner, simple green, MEK, alcohol...depends on what you are needing clean and if it needs to be water-soluble. Paint thinner (not lacquer thinner) is similar to the solvent mechanics use to clean parts like wheel bearings, just clean/blow all excess off any parts you're going to reuse and pre-lubricate as needed.

@Going_Going_Gone and @Fastcar I guess I was just wondering what you keep on the shelf for general parts cleaning. I agree, I can use solvents for some things but I was hoping to find something water soluble. Maybe something like an alkaline cleaner like you find in industrial places. I started looking around at those but I realized there are alot of different kinds and strengths so thats why I reached out on this forum.
I almost always have Simple Green on hand, but I have never used for parts cleaning. Is that a good option (if used at the right concentration)? Other ideas? Thanks again, sorry I wasn't overly clear on what I was asking.

In addition to those listed by Faster, I listed the solvents I have around. If you're unsure if the product will do what you need it to do, read the directions on the container. Many of them will damage paint and trim, so careful use is important.

Simple Green will clean a lot, as will Zep Industrial Purple. You can buy the Zep at Home Depot.

I use acetone to get oil films off and leave surfaces prepped for sealants. Also used it to prep the block and head on a couple engines so they are squeaky clean for the head gasket. You can get it by the quart or gallon at a big box store, and I transfer it to a small squirt bottle for normal use.

Paint thinner is great, as others have noted.

I second the recommendations for the purple degreasers, but you don’t want to leave aluminum soak too long in Purple Power because it will corrode the aluminum, found out the hard way on that one.
