I have a 2019 Expedition that was making the cam phaser shudder, had the recall work completed and the dealer didn't seal the engine properly and allowed an oil leak. Took it back to repair the engine oil leak only for them to leave the clamp off one of the coolant hoses. It's a hose that only until the thermostat kicks in did it leak because of the pressure. No indication at all that I had a problem - no dash lights etc. Got home and noticed fan running so fast, like an engine taking off and all my coolant pouring out. No way to know how long it has been running that way. Called Ford only for them to leave me stranded in my driveway with no car, no options to rent one because it was Saturday around 3pm. Way to go Ford! Borrowed transportation (BOO FORD) and had someone look at it in my driveway - ZERO coolant. Water was added because of how hot the car was, immediately boiling, yet no lights on the dash. Nearly two gallons of water added and engine just sucked it in. They're coming Monday to tow it in, but how do I now protect myself that there isn't damage to the engine, water pump, etc.? Looking back, now find it ironic that I was given no paperwork on the last visit to repair the initial work. I can prove it was there because I had a rental. I plan to specifically ask for all the paperwork on all repairs but how do I know there isn't other significant damage now. NOT COOL FORD!! Do I use the same dealer, choose another - reach out to Ford Corporate? Any advice is appreciated.

First, you need to take a deep breath and try to de-stress. It is a very frustrating situation but anything in a car can be fixed!

If any damage happened due to overheating, in many cases it will show itself within the first few miles. However, there is still some risk of stuff appearing after few thousands of miles.

I would calmly ask for the following:
1- a complete cooling system flush, since water was added (or incompatible coolant) to address this emergency situation.
2- an extended powertrain warranty to cover any damage due to their shoddy repair

I learned years ago that when dealing with car dealer’s service departments to ALWAYS insist on a written repair order (R/O) invoice, with a notation of the complaints and the work done - including any parts or fluids. It doesn’t matter if it is customer pay or warranty repair (or both).

I’ve had dealers tell me they would mail or email the R/O to me, and I politely tell them I will wait while they finish the paperwork. If that doesn’t work, ask to speak with the service manager.

Good luck - I would be furious. I hope you can get the matter resolved.

Thank you!!! I had the same suggestions from someone else. Yes, very frustrating.

It's super bad to put cold water into an overheated engine. I cracked a head on a car doing that years ago. Always better to just leave it turned off and let it cool for 30 minutes or so. It's not something that you would want to mention to Ford, or they could try to shift the blame.

Hello. To clarify, I should rephrase, we did wait almost two hours bc my brother had to travel to check it out for me. Tysm for the feedback. I really appreciate it. :)
