Hello,
I have a 2015 Expedition with just under 80k miles on it. Regular oil changes and maintenance. Please help me diagnose this engine noise. Below is a link to view a video of the noise.

I have seen other Expeditions with phaser issues but wasn't sure if this was the same sound. Thanks for all of your help.

When I tried to listen to the audio file (I have a 2015 Expedition) - your link took me to a page that tried to require me to download an app (I didn’t).

You may want to try to post it some other way that doesn’t force or require an app download.

Sorry about that. I uploaded it to OneDrive and when I click on the link I am taken directly to the video with no prompts for an app. Maybe it works normally on a PC but not a tablet/phone? Not sure. I just uploaded it to another site. Here is that link.

Rod knocks are most pronounced at around 2K' RPM with a floating / unloaded engine. I've lived the horror...had 3 rod bearings go out in my years--all dissimilar engines--and the behavior was the same (Chevy 327, Datsun L20B and Ford 4.9L 6 cyl). Drive it with windows down in 1st or 2nd gear and listen. Hard to believe in your case at 80K' miles you have a bottom end noise.

Consider all things that rotate, including in the accessory drive, flex plate and also the exhaust system. I just got done chasing down a nasty vibration in the 4.9L 6-cyl that turned out to be the water pump.

This is the sound of a Ford Cash Register. It might be pisston noise which may require engine rebuild or replacement. This happened to both my 1997 F150 and 1997 Expedition at 30,000 and 245,000 miles respectively.

Get a stethoscope and see if you can narrow down where it's coming from.

Started to hear a similar noise about two weeks ago that I initially thought might be from lower octane gas or even bad gas. Then yesterday my radiator fans started to go off at full and stay on. It did just start to heat up over the last week, but the fans would go high speed regardless of AC being on or low temp outside. Today I happened to switch over the dash display to show engine temp and a watched in surprise as the line started to creep up to H. I was on the phone to my mechanic in minutes because I was just a few blocks away. While talking to him the engine coolant high temp warning started to ding. Initial diagnoses = engine knocking noise coming from the bearings going out on the water pump pully. Coolant leaking out from bad water pump causing the engine temp to rise which was engaging the fans full time.

2017 XLT Expedition, 92k miles.

Thank you all for your help. Seems like this might turn into quite the investigation and money pit.
