As anyone up on the news may have assumed, there will be a huge demand for automotive gun safes in the coming months. In New York, where keeping a pistol locked in a car was always frowned upon, new legislation will require that it remains locked up in my car whenever I enter an establishment where money is used.

Anyway, the point of this post is to remind anyone who may need one to get it now while it's available. Console Vault, which makes the Ford OEM safes has a 20% off sale. I ordered one for my 2008 truck for $230. The 4th Generation Expedition safe is also available from Lock'er Down and they're made in USA. Probably some import junk out there too that's cheaper and of lesser quality. But it's on you if it's pried open with a plastic spoon.

Best of luck to you.

I have a Ford-branded Console Vault that I have been using since 2015. I can't imagine having a vehicle without one now. Clearly, if someone really wants to get into it they will, but the vast majority of auto break-ins are smash-and-grabs so I consider it good protection.

In other words if you get out of the vehicle you have to secure it? I'm fairly certain every establishment I've entered in my life uses money...

In New York, guns will be banned from "sensitive areas" which include (among dozens of places) anyplace things are sold. So if I go into a store or restaurant, I'll have to lock the firearm in the car. Sounds unsafe to me, but I just follow rules. Last week NY considered this criminal; soon it will be the new rule. So while my firearm never left my side, now I need a console safe.

So if you'll need one, get it while you can. I suspect they'll be quite a demand.

Beware that most states have strict laws about "hidden compartments" in vehicles. Seems you cannot get creative either.

False. A handful of states have laws that prohibit secret compartments and most (all?) of those only explicitly prohibit compartments used for (or intended to be used for) illegal items.

Console Vault(tm) for my 2017 was out of stock for well over 6 months. Was delivered last week and installed in roughly 10 minutes. You lose the coin tray and, unlike my 2007 Console Volt, the actual console lid can't be closed unless the vault lid is closed first -- the 2007 would push the vault lid closed and allow it to spring open when lifted. Minor hassle. One (1) USB port remains available with the lid locked although the cable is almost too short.

Someone at the local Ford dealer tried to break into my console 5 or 6 years ago and slightly sprung the lid which is how I knew. Unsuccessful and I was able to repair it easily. With all the plastic the console itself can certainly be smashed with the right tools -- this ain't gonna stand up to a crow bar or angle grinder! -- but the little vault does stop the console being a target of opportunity.

The new vault has a Ford logo and the box has Ford labels so this may be a dealer accessory too.
